Because we want to succeed, and the only way we see how to, is to do menial things like this.
We want our children to be happy and never want for anything, so we sacrifice our happiness for them.
We want to have nice things and a nice home, yet we lose connection with what matters, genuine human relationships.
My suggestion is to be as self sufficient as possible, or make a community of /out/doorsey people to all live innawoods together on a property, no electricity, no plumbing, no machines, just what you make with your own hands.
But that wouldn't necessarily work, or even be realistic.
The general idea though would be that everyone helps everyone, hunting is acceptable and encouraged, farming for produce too, eating seasonally would be amazing. Have some people pickle food for winter. Have some people blacksmith tools, have some people do logging. All in all, my dream is to have a self sufficient community with people like me, who just want a simple life away from pollution and narcissism that I find prevalent in cities.

Depending on what your situation is, you might be able to work from home. If you are good with computers you might be able to work from home in a rural area.

No one challenge remains: If you are anything like me, then you probably dont know shit about farming or homesteading. However, through WWOOF you can find a farm in your area where you volunteer to learn organic farming practices. You and your gf can get experience and knowledge through this way.

There are a lot of different people on Youtube who believe many different things who have gone offgrid. Everyone from Thulean Perspective to Wranglestar to Viking Preparedness. I hate to say this, but if they can accomplish this what is stopping us? Live extremely frugally, learn what your real needs are and save money. Before you know it, you'll be a free man on your land.

I would also highly recommend the Backwoods Home magazine series.

Fucking bullshit. We need rural healthcare workers like nobody's business - that means doctors, dentists, nurses, PAs, RNs, oral hygienists, med techs, radiologists, you name it. Thats enough to buy large land somewhere, with maybe a house on it depending on where you look.

Then you can launch a small business or live passively with dividends from investments. Its really not that difficult if you dont mind wage slaveing for just a little longer.

This is what's reassuring to me. I'm interested in clinical psychology and being /out/. Rural areas are often hugely unrepresented for mental health and I think I'll have a lucrative business. I work in Medical IT in a small Colorado town. Good money, remote most days, stable salary. If you don't do the med/nursing/dental school route (highly recommended though), you can still get stable work in basically any remote hospitals or clinics.

As far as living in a rural area, I'm limited only to where there is an opening. My dream is to buy land and build myself an orchard somewhere in Northern California. Hopefully either the Mendocino/Humboldt county area or the Mono lake area.

My primary worry is that for my entire life I have been a SoCal city boy. I know my way around growing plants, and I'm competent in handling myself in the outdoors. You'll be billing medicare just like everyone else. It's not more money or even more clientele, it's just less competition. The good news is that these are generally low cost-of-living areas so your money will go farther. But don't go thinking you're gonna be rich doing this kind of work. There's plenty of reason no one moves in on these populations.

Buy a farm. Find some older folks that are getting too old to work theirs that don't have kids or their kids would just want to sell it, and make them an offer. Chances are they'd rather sell it to you than one of the corporate farms. Obviously ask for the relevant financials and take them to a good accountant to make sure you'll be able to survive, and you'll definitely want to do tons of research about the type of farming if you've got zero experience (in which case you'd do well to buy a farm that comes with farmhands and keep them on to get them to teach you stuff)
