Why do you have to choose? Why can’t you have both? They serve completely different tasks. When you need a knife, a lighter isn’t going to exactly help you, and when you need to light a marb red, a knife isn’t going to help you

Honestly for the majority of folks on here.. knife...

For MOST of /out/, a simple 50ish dollar Buck, Schrade, etc. will be more than fine. I've been using a victorinox swiss army knife that has been working fantastic for MY NEEDS. (At a campground, so whittling sticks, cutting rope, making wood shavings to help a fire start... I do also own a SOG seal pup and recently a Schrade Golden Spike, both are more than suitable for MOST people going /out/doors. The SOG I could possibly baton with, but again I keep a hatchet and a folding saw in my car, and throw it in my camping bag

Now on the opposing side of things. You don't want a dollar store steak knife (yes, that really is a thing... really) which is a piece of thin stamped metal that you can bend in half practically by looking at it.

Most people who shill knives either just like them and have no real use for them or bushcraft. It's annoying as fuck when I take my /k/ larper friends out and they use any and every chance they get to whip out their blades.

I have an expensive folder (pic related) but honest to god I got on fine with my $8 opnel or $15 mora for the longest time. I really only use it for opening food packages and that's about it, I bought a nicer one that I can trust to do double duty if it has to which itll probably never have to

Fucking this. I literally carry 3 knives in my pack. An Old Hickory butcher knife for larger tasks and battoning when I leave my Plumb carpenters hatchet at camp, a Mora Companion for processing smaller wood or whittling to pass the time, and a Mora craftline basic 511 as a food prep knife (pic related, just finished sharpening and oiling it...) And aside from just how useful they are for day to day tasks on the homestead as well as /out/, the basic maintenance of them is very satisfying and makes me feel connected to my ancestors that did everything by hand. I reject this tear open food, everything is disposable just buy a new one, "culture" we live in. There's a reason my axe and hatchet were both made over 50 years ago, because people made stuff back then that you maintained yourself instead of buying a new one every year. Provided my children don't raise them to be little entitled shits, most of my tools and gear will still be usable when my grandchildren are my age.

Ceramic blade knives are annoying to sharpen. I especially love it when they're advertised as never needing sharpening. So far the only way I've managed to get mine back to a razor edge is with a folding double sided 600 and 450 diamond sharpener. Water and oil stones just chew up the edge. Fun fact, you can sharpen and hone your other knives on the spine of that knife if you sand it a bit to take the coating off the spine so it becomes even more useful for the money.

I’ve got a $200 Bark River Bravo 1 with lignum vite scales and honestly, other then fucking around whittling sticks, I’ve only ever used it for opening and cutting up a package of Pinconning cheese…

Still, it’s a cool ass knife and if I were in some kinda Grizzly Adams survival situation, it would serve me well.

I bought one of those Mora Light-My-Fire knives for my nephew several years back when he was in Webelos and while Moras are pretty much just steak knives, the ferro rod works well and it would make a good knife to keep in a car survival kit.

54 years of camping and I've not once packed or used paracord or any other type of string or cord. Fishing line, sure, but I only ever used it for fishing.

There's no reason not take one. Even if you don't use it regularly, it's just good to have on-hand. If you're just like hiking or whatever, then yeah; most of your food's pre-packaged, and/or gets eaten raw, and you've probably got a tent or hammock, or whatever, so day-to-day you probably won't use a knife, but in the event that you need to cut something more dense than the wrapper on your ramen pack, it's a good tool to have.

You don't "need" one but it's makes most tasks a lot more comfortable and safer. I also would trust a modern lock much more than an opinel. Carving shit cleaning game etc is a lot easier with a fixed blade

An Opinel has a very strong lock, with the downside being that it's slower to operate. Whittling is not an essential task, and cleaning game is more dependent on ability to take an edge, and the geometry of the blade itself. An Opinel wouldn't be the first knife I would take into the wilderness, though it would get the job done, and there are other options that show how cheap folders are plenty capable of being decent workhorses.

Well we agree on that. My point is that knives are not actually necessary for most kind of /out/, and big knives like in OP aren't necessary for the more extreme end of things. It's not so much that knives aren't useful, more so that people often obsess over knives and pay far too much for premium "bushcraft" knives. With all that said though, you wouldn't find me /out/ without a knife, even if it is just an Opinel no.8 on a weekender.

If you are "hiking" on the AT you are not in the wilderness, there are towns close by the whole way.
It's basically like a walk in a big park, you can do it in sneakers, but some people think that is actually hiking.
If you are out in the middle of nowhere in actual wilderness where the nearest town is maybe a week away on foot it's a different thing.

Entirely depends on what you are doing, where heading and for how long. Knife is one of those things that is simply handy to have and since it doesn't weight a tonne, it's always better to have one than end up being fucked by not having it.
Simple question - how do you plan to slice up anything, if you don't have a knife? If you don't need slicing, then you aren't really going that far away, so you basically don't need MOST of kits that are advised to be taken.
