Hey /out/laws, what's your favorite cutting/chopping gear?

For me, its gotta be a Fiskars X7 and a Gerber Sliding Saw. both are extremely light and study. Pic related

What do you all prefer/brands? Estwing, Gerber, Victorinox, ect

i like a good ox head brush axe, it has a nice wide head. really good for slicing through willows, but not as good as a wedge axe for taking down big trees.

still i feel it's my favorite choice for an all-around axe.

for a mini-saw i carry a leatherman wave and the saw on that does fine for what i need. if the leatherman can't do the job, my husqvarna 374 is my go to chainsaw.

Any of you know anything about the Gerber Hunter Axe? I'm not sure the exact name of it, but I saw it at the store today and it looked exactly like the fiskars pictured in >>136960 but I haven't heard anything about it.

In particular, no. In general, I don't like the Gerber products I own (people keep giving me Gerber pocket knives for some reason). Their problem appears to be that they can't heat-treat metal. That might be an issue with an axe.

Day trek or overnight trip I usually take pic related. $15, lighter than an axe, and perfect for the vines that take over the trails here during summer. Wouldn't try
splitting big logs with it but it'll chop wrist-thick wood easily. During colder months I'll swap it for a Truper axe. As for saws I just use a generic Walmart bucksaw.

The saw I use is either my Fiskars $10 folding saw, or for the larger jobs, my 18" chain saw with hand loops (I think it's an off brand saber saw)

How effective is the hand chain saw? And did you make it yourself? I like the idea of it folding up small, but I still imagine the sliding saw being tons more easier to use, like for cutting small branches off, you don't have to get the whole chainsaw set up...

I'm the one you asked, and >>137126 is right. It's a nice spare that fits in an altoids tin. Just go to the hardware store and buy their cheapest chainsaw chain and make a few. You only need about 8" of chain to cut anything you want to be that close to when it falls over.

How would this be for basically taking a downed tree and basically chopping/trimming the limbs away so you had varying bits for kindling and fuel wood... leaving the trunk to basically push along over the course of the night? I took my Fiskars overnight a couple of weeks ago and, while very nice, I can see the point of taking something you can fashion a new handle for if needed. (The Fiskars is really my yardwork tool, anyway.)

I'm going between a hatchet and a 'hawk like the CS Rifleman's 'hawk. I like the lightness and elegance of the tomahawk, but know the hatchet is probably the best practical choice. I may go ahead and get one for brush clearing in the back yard and see what I think of it for camping.

OP here, and I really do like it. Extremely colid feel and really light. The handle is hollow, as you noticed. Possibility to put some 550 in there, but having all the weight at the head makes it great for hacing awat at whole trees, branches, or as small as bark.

Whatever floats your boat. I'm not a fan of Gerber because I've got some of their pocket knives and don't trust their metalsmithing. Then again, I've got a couple of knives that should probably be crap but happen to have been heat treated correctly and are great.

Seriously, get out. The only thing I don't like about the BG stuff is the logo. Looks so corny, and I wouldn't be caught dead with my survival gear with another dude's initials on it. Got a fiskars "super sharp" machete at the last minute before goin innawoods. Maybe their hatchets are good, but holy shit the machete was horrifically bad imo, I don't have much recent experience with machetes, but it's hard to imagine one worse than this. It's possible it just comes with a very bad factory edge, so maybe if I put some work on it, it'll cut. Oh, and the handle really is a joke.

I don't know what you people are doing to snap fiskars handles. They have a lifetime warranty for a reason. I've split over 15 hardwood cords with my x27, including dozens of overstrikes, and it keeps on chugging.

I use an ontario steel machete for clearing trails. Its blade is so thick and heavy it almost functions like an ax against larger branches.

you mongoloid, none of those knives are are good choices for innawoods carry, especially the top one.

as for the machetes, if you are using it as a machete it doesn't matter what you have, machetes are for clearing light brush. if you try and use one in place of a clever type copping knife for chopping wood and whatnot it will bend, chip and break. machetes are a unitasker where a large fixed blade is your on stop go to tool

if you ask good ol' daddy Nessmuk he'd tell you the ideal setup is a hatchet for heavy chopping (double faces head), a twin bladed folding knife and a mid to large fix blade

hatchets are a matter of personal preference really, so you get a pass on that. i personally prefer the Fiskars

I ordered a CS pipe hawk today. I know they're not hefty choppers like axes and hatchets, but I think it would do the work I'd like it for... stripping down dry, fallen deadwood and such not unlike what one fellow was doing a couple weeks ago in our hunting group with a kukri. It just seems kind of fun and the ability to customize the handle is kinda neat. Gotta dig out the woodburner.

i dunno. i have the kabar cutlass. great chopper. the blade is very torsion-resistant and sharp. the sheath sucks. build yourself a kydex or glue it with hot glue.

It's dark mahogany stain from Home Depot, cheap as hell. Two coats. The head finish is original, but as you beat it down it smooths out and gets shinier, the affect your seeing on the back of the head is from me using its as a hammer.

pic related of my chopping tool. It's an offbrand mtech tomahawk i bought for like $20 bucks to practice throwing tomahawks but this thing is fuckign indestructable. Took it out one time and said 'ok lets see if we can break this thing'. nope, can stick the tip in a tree and stand on it, and it can support my 300lb fat ass no problem. set 2 chairs up and put it between them and stood on it like that as well, no bend or anything. sometimes cheap things are made well, been on my pack and in hard use for over a year now

Yeah, I already have a bunch of bookmarks and saved stuff for improving and modding them. Take out the screw, file the burrs, file the edge slightly, sand the handle for a better fit, etc. I've seen several that mention heating the head up in the oven to 200 then tapping the handle into it and letting it cool for a better fit.

I like what these folks do with some of them, putting leather at the base of the head.

I'll probably also strip the paint off the head and use gun bluing on it. I like the look it gets from boiling in vinegar, but... yeah... don't want to stink up the house.

I have a bad feeling I'm on the cusp of a new hobby.

Which has jack shit to do with whether it's a full tang knife or not. A full tang has the tang go all the way past the part of the handle you hold. It can be rat-tail, stick, full-width, push, encapsulated, hidden, tapered, skeletonized, or extended and still be a full tang.

Full tang, 3/4 tang, 1/2 tang, and any other fractional tang simply refer to the length of the tang relative to the handle and have nothing to do with the width or diameter of the tang.
