I have seen massive stacks of these withstand blizzards and storms — really useful in glacier runoff (rivers) that cut trails — a bunch of water, dirt, mud, volcanic ash, rocks, ice; you need a marker to see which direction is the right one. This sort of use scenario is the original use of cairns.

They're very handy when it is foggy and visibility is poor (happens frequently). The cairns on these mountains are much lower and more stable than these things you are posting. They don't look berry useful.

They used to be very rare here in Switzerland 10 years ago, now they're absolutely everywhere. I blame social media. I even started seeing some on the way to my super sikrit camping spot which I assumed didn't get that many visitors. I've been thinking about making some pyrogaphed "no kern allowed" signs but that would just replace one kind of defacing with another.
