Shooting an animal yourself is the only way that you can ensure a clean and humane kill.

The deer that you shoot for venison suffers less than the factory farmed beef in your supermarket.

Some use under-powered or inappropriate ammunition for the game they are hunting, which causes needless suffering.

Some are just lazy and stupid.

People just don't understand why I can say "no" to a steak but tear into my summer catch of crabs. Delaware is pretty awesome for seafood, but it doesn't lend itself for forest meat.

Crossbow? 1 Shot one kill. If you miss, and he notices(And he will notice, deer are skittish), that's it. It takes too goddamned long to reload a crossbow. If you hit a tree with a broad head, it's gone.

I was talking about primitive weapon season. That includes bows, crossbow,and muzzleloading firearms. Each hunting season goes off in stages. Bows and crossbows get first dibs, then muzzleloaders, then regular firearms.

it's more of a challenge, a crossbow is seen as cheating by a lot of bow hunters.

I wouldn't say it's much about aggression. That's boar-hunting with a spear. Most hunters I run across like being outdoors, game meat, and the act of tracking itself. The actual 'confrontation' is pretty insubstantial unless a bear comes up on you when you're skinning it or something.

It's also like shooting a .73 caliber bullet at a deer, so can't go wrong with that.

Buckshot is a bunch of .33(00 buck) lead balls packed into a shotgun shell, and when fired, they begin to spread out. They were used because one was more than likely to score a hit than compared to a single large round lead ball. So you have to be closer with buckshot than you do with slugs.

Depends on your state, as far as tracking goes. I'm from Texas and the vast majority of the "hunting" here is done in enclosed stands 30 yards from feeders that have been up and running for months (to each his own if you like this). Personally, I love finding out where they are moving, watching the patterns, and waking up at dark to go sit or walk a bottom where I know they are moving. And confrontation - I took a muzzleloader most of last season. In late December, I had an extremely large and pissed off hog run up on me while I was sitting off gully. He never burst through the underbrush but came right to the edge about 30' from me and my one 50-cal shot. I was looking for trees to climb.

Rifled slug master race. I advise you load your own buck shot if you plan to hunt with with it though, as I have had VERY poor results with commercial loads. As in I shot a 160# (after field dressing) buck four times with 2 3/4" 00 and he managed to book it a good 70 yards before face planting.

It happens. This last season, I had a line of deer moving diagonal towards me across a cut about 140+ yards away. They were each disappearing behind a big patch of cedar not giving me much of a chance to pick and choose. I took a big meat deer right as it was darting behind the bush. The shot went a little wide and missed the heart and instead, took out the lungs. It ran about 40 yards and collapsed. It took about 10 seconds to die. I felt bad.

...Of course, it was forgotten when I thin-sliced some of that back strap and "wheeled" it up with some cream cheese and jalapeno, marinated in Italian dressing and tossed on the coals.

I didn't get my deer this year. Last year took one with my crossbow, not as clean a kill as I wanted but it ran a quarter mile. This year the coyotes were everywhere and drove the deer away. Coyote hunting is looking like an option though. They were taking down small game 100 feet from my blind while I was in it, and the state regs allow NIGHT VISION! I don't have any coyote recipes though, and I want some pelts anyway. I don't think I could shoot one in winter cause they look too much like my husky in their winter coat.

It's hard to go wrong with a K31 shooting-wise, they can just be tricky to feed sometimes. I'm thinking about getting a reloading bench just to make it easier.

No problem. I've got the milsurp bug myself, and I've made it my mission to collect at least one of every WWII major player's service rifle.

Just a few years back (2005 or so) K31s were going for about the same as what a nugget is now, so make what you will of that.

If you do bite the bullet on a K31, I'd recommend trying for one of the older ones with a walnut stock. That may just be a personal preference of mine, but it seems like the walnut is tougher than the birch stocks and better-looking.

Oh, and K31s tend to have ID tags under the buttplate. Neat little factoid about that.

I have a freezer full of ethically harvested game: animals that fell instantly and were completely and carefully processed by yours truly. I kill, clean, butcher, and cook all of my own game.

I know many hunters don't have any respect for their prey but being disconnected from that $10 Wal-Mart ribeye is both lazy and inhumane. So we choose to awake before dawn, fighting the chill with a thermos of coffee, with the wind in our faces, waiting for a chance - a chance - of respectfully harvesting a creature that has evolved to outsmart us in its own environment.

Well of course not all "hunters" are noble and heroic. Go to any "Cabela's" or Bass Pro shop and you'll see legions of limp-dick hunters who kill for the thrill and bragging rights at the bar rather than the freezer.

Hunters who perch up in sniper towers to gun down deer while they eat at a timer-actuated feeder? I can't respect guys like that.

I spot-stalk exclusively, after hours of scouting and careful reading of the wind, the moon, and the nearby water supplies. Finding and reading scat, bed-downs, and tracks. And the funny thing is that actually having to work for it is infinitely more rewarding than picking off a critter from an air conditioned nest with a chair and a six-pack cooler.

American hunting culture needs a revolution of skill and compassion if people are going to take the sport seriously into the future.

spot stalking is out of the question and hunting from a stand is the only way left.

Well I don't know much about the hunting in Germany. From what I saw of the Schwarzwald there is plenty of nature there but not many other places in the country. If you're hunting agricultural fields instead of true forests, I guess a stand might make sense.

Oh I've sat in stands in freezing winds. I was originally taught to hunt from a stand, it's only in the last 10 years or so that I've rejected that method. Uncomfortable thought it may be, it's easier and more boring than spot-stalking through the same freezing winds and mud.
