Anyone getting into mountaineering? I did some of the Class III and IV 14ers in Colorado and now wanting to do some in winter then Rainier & Denali. Don't have a good team setup for it though.

What mountains/routes you guys planning? AT ski or snowshoe? Any alpine or vertical ice climbers?

Ya, I did Longs (III) solo and just tagged along a group on some Class IV. If you've done even a bit of rock climbing then you'll be fine skill-wise. There certainly is more real risk but it was less perceived risk for me; I'm terrified of heights and roped climbing still wiggs-me-the-fuck-out. The class IV I did was just loose rock and stupidly steep mountain sides. Longs was quite solid (but polished to a slick finish in areas) rock but the IV had big rocks that can come out and kill you or anyone below. Definitely wear helmets.

Been hiking mountains since I was a kid, but I haven't had the time/money to do real mountaineering since I left home for college. I did cross the Swiss/Italian border during a break while on a field course on alpine ecology though.

I'm researching courses at the moment, it's been something that I've been looking to try out for about a year now, I have been hiking and scrambling for years so mountaineering seems to be the next step.

I do lots, every style of climbing. I posted a thread here about a month ago that got pretty big.

As for the skills required, go on courses or, better still, join a good (university mountaineering club or similar) club or meet more experienced people at the wall/crag.

climbed a basalt tuya in iceland, about 500m elevation, that's my claim to mountaineering. Had to find my own path up though as none existed already, and found a giant lake at the top. The view was totally sublime.

Pic related, an guy in his 60s I met on the mountain after a big storm. Hung with him as he needed help with the trail breaking. Super encouraging to see an older guy still getting out there, alone even. Went in up to my chest in parts and had to cut a lot of switchbacks.

If you are UK based and have done some climbing and are <25yo look at Jonothan Conville memorial courses. If not, in all honesty I have no experience of doing courses and can't recommend much. Glenmore Lodge and Plas y Brenin (Scotland and Wales respectively) offer loads, see their websites. It's a lot cheaper to just join a club, meet people and go from there though.

I'm based in Scotland, hence I climb a lot in the Cairngorms, on Ben Nevis etc. Going on a bit of a roadtrip for a month from Tuesday, gonna visit the far NW of Scotland down as far as northern France with my girlfriend.

If you properly acclimatize is it always avoidable aside from the death zone? Or are some people prone to it once they reach a certain height?

Both statements are correct. People react differently to high altitudes. For instance, approximately 20% of the population will start experiencing symptoms of acute mountain sickness after rapidy going to 2,500 meters (8,000 ft) and 40% after climbing to 3000 meters (10,000 ft) and so forth. As far as I know, complete acclimatization can always be accomplished (aside from the deaht zone) although it may take some longer to do so than others.

Personal experience= ascending 3000M in a day, I get headaches. Sleep at alpine camp for a day, no headaches. A lot depends on general fitness and individual genetics. Also even stating hydrated up there is tough, can’t really melt snow every hour or lug up gallons of water.

Looking to climb Nanga parbat and an end game goal. Kind of daunting to think about it even though its one of the safer mountain, its a marathon and a half up it.

Not sure if you consider the White Mountains in New Hampshire as mountaineering (especially compared to Colorado), but the views are stunning and you'll be hiking for a good 6-7 hours (if the trail is compacted).

Also UK based here, what are you on about, you've got the lakes and the peak district what, like 3 hours away? Do iiittttt. Me and my buddies drive up from devon to scotland in the winter to do climbing. Lake district is supposed to have fantastic ice routes in the winter months.

Bagged one, Island Peak in Nepal, after having done three 5000m peaks. Was thinking about going to Pakistan last years but ended up having to 'settle' for Nepal because it was too late in the season for Pakistan. Probably the easiest 6000m peak around Feel free to ask questions.

End game for me would the Volcanic Seven Summits, Soviet Snow Leopard Award and an 8000m peak.

Nope.

I'd recommend going with a partner on everything harder than grade II UIAA

acclimation works but the sucky part is that altitude sickness might hit you anyway.
the only cure when you develop acute symptoms is going to sea level.

It was the 1990-2003 range. A lot of the deaths were back when climbing gear and knowledge was real crude. These were the type of shoes they used back before crampons were even invented for gripping snow and ice.

Pakistan I can't say, but Nepal depends on the season. The trekking peaks have low-shoulder-high season prices and vary between 70 to 400USD. The 7 and 8k mountains I don't know, but they'll be more expensive.

Also, in Nepal you'll need a guide, and Pakistan forces you to take a liaisons officer in some cases who you'll have to provide with equipment, even though the man will probably not climb and lounge in base camp. Add on another couple hujdred €/$ for that. Then any othet services etc. In Nepal at least, for many peaks you can cut costs by going to base camp by yourself. Also, group discounts and haggling in person at an agency are a thing, did that in Kathmandu. Got off the plane, checked into hostel, went to an agency, haggled, left for Island Peak base camp next day by ourselves, met guide at appointed lodge and climbed the peak.

Tl;dr: we paid ~700USD per person, two people.

Cant wrap my head around why Annapurna is so dangerous. Is it just because of the Avalanches?

Hand-tailored but pretty standard ascent for Nepal. Keep in mind that you also have to get to base camp which, in case of Island Peak, requires either
>long bus ride and 10-14 days of hiking one way, at €20 per day for food and accomodation

Plane ends up being cheaper because it cuts off well over a week. Note that this is only valid for peaks of which base camp lies in the the Khumbu region.

Im going to miss hiking in NH this winter. I am currently in Colorado (although I don't see myself staying for too long. My heart is in the Whites). Im gonna do some hiking around here but not sure what's safe as this is a totally different environment (avalanches?)

You're kind of right. Annapurna has no routes even reasonably free of objective hazards. Ed Viesturs nearly took it off his list because he wasn't sure it'd ever fit within his level of acceptable risk, and that's a guy who ended up climbing the 14 highest peaks in the world without supplemental oxygen.

I guess when Ed was acclimatizing for Annapurna Him, Jimmy and Veikka were climbing Cho Oyu but Jimmy got Alititude sick so Ed had to take him down so Jimmy couldnt Climb Annapurna with them.
