The ecwcs system is great. I slept in all 3 layers on many afghani hilltops. If you can get a legit system for under 200 bucks I would at a go for it.

It is very heavy. And preparation plus money will save you a lot of pounds. 2 probably. But I used to love the simplicity of just always taking my ecwcs gear.

Generally with commercial sleeping bags, you can choose two of the following:
>warm
>light
>cheap
The modular sleep system is only warm. It used to be a good value kit for being snug on a budget, especially the bivvy bag, but it has unfortunately been memed into price ranges that often far outstrip the value of the system.

This. You used to be able to get a new/unissued complete system for ~$100, or the light patrol bag for $15-20. Now the bivvy bag alone goes for that and a complete system is $300+.

Varusteleka had the whole system for 170€ (with VAT), Bivvy is out of stock now but components seem to get restocked sporadically.

It's overpriced my dude. Get a deal on a down sleeping bag, you can get one that is comfy all year round and is light enough to take backpacking for the same price. It's cool, but impractical.
