Got a 4 year old boy. i want him to get addicted to playing out in the woods. He is way too young to use a knife or a .22 so he cant cut or shoot anything.

Toys, TV and the A/C are too appealing.

Looking for ideas on what to do with a little kid in the woods to get him addicted to the woods.

Any ideas?!?

don't fall into the trap of being lazy yourself and just take him /out/ every chance you get. bring a picnic, make a game out of looking for stuff and seeing how far you can walk, share your enthusiasm, and be patient with moving at his pace.

source: i have a 3 year old i've been taking /out/ since he was an infant and he loves it.

I was a camp counselor for years. I spent a lot of time Teaching archery, kayaking, and street hockey. kids are clumsy as hell.. I'm not giving my kids a knife before the age of 11 and a gun until they are damn well ready. I am sure as shit not letting anyone else tell me when its safe to put a gun in my kids hands.

It takes some serious fucking determimation to cut off a finger and relying on scouts to teach your kid how to use tools is the saddest thing in the world. So what, I got scars all over my fingers from using razor knives to install floors with my uncle starting at age 8. its literally the exact track that scouts laid out. you cant use sheath knives until you have shown proficiency with a pocket knife (age 7), bow saw (age 8), axe (9), -- and finally totin at chip 10 when you are eligible to become a scout and once he gets that ill gift my kid his first knife.

The boyscouts doesn't help children at all

Kids need to be bullied by their peers to not be such absoute faggots and most perents don't understand that and want to shelter their kid with the help of church programs and boyscouts together.
This caused alot of those types of kids to hinder the exploration and Adventure of alot of the kids I was with and guided. Let your kids learn on their own mate

Look for slow-worms, frogs, newts toads, get them used to handling critters. Let them climb rocks and trees on their own (be ready to catch).

My daughters love the woods and my youngest being 5 has known for ages how to be careful and use common sense /out/. She'll tell her older sister off for going too high or not having three point contact on a tree or rock face!

I always take an extra set of clothes, hat and gloves as well as snacks just to be on the safe side. kids get tired and grouchy but a couple of haribo every time you do some set distance keeps things moving.
But I think a tarp was my best investment being able to make a den anytime anywhere puts a certain safety net in a kids mind I think.

woah. i guess we had really different scout experiences. and that really bums me out. scouts was amazing for me. we had at least two good trips a month. our days had a lot of on hands practical learning and skill building, and our nights were just long ass games of manhunts and listening to the dads tell stories about their worst hiking mistakes. It was also some of the best time i spent with my dad and where i learned to love the things he did (sailing, white water, good eats). i remember seeing a thread about this a while ago but im still bummed to hear that the program turned to shit in so many places.

my 5yo niece has latched on to mushrooms, we count how many she spots and what colors she finds the most of
my 2yo nephew loves going on walks in the woods and cant stop asking to go /out/ whenever hes with me
the main thing is to show them how passionate you are about the outdoors, kids want to mimic the people they look up to and if you think its awesome they will get just as excited as you do whenever you take them /out/

Make a usable bow and arrows from forest stuff. Teach him how to use a knife properly. Like the 3 knife cuts for whittling and how to sharpen it properly. Tool safety & maintenance should always be the first things you teach someone before they own it themselves.

I usually just sit nearby and enjoy the scenery. Or when I am outside her vision, I sometimes watch youtube vids (hi varg).
She (and the dog) is perferctly fine with being alone in the (dutch) woods.

Jesus this thing went off the rails. After typing the OP i went out into the woods and tried to build a little shelter to make a little campground and/or hangout spot in the woods.

A 4 year old boy doesn't have the best focus, strength or discipline to force themselves to do something like crude construction, but i think that he will like it as we continue to build, have fires, make some meals over the fire, etc

Thanks for the replies about hunting for bugs and plant recognition. great idea. i need to study up on identifying plants and trees anyways.

For all of you people who were attacking that one guy... sure 11 years old may be on the late side. but calm down.

When i mentioned not giving him a knife or a gun i meant that in the sense that he can't be left alone to roam the woods with a .22 by himself. You cant give a 4 year old a knife and a .22 and tell him "have fun! just be back in time for supper!" I don't care what you think you did as a child or what you do with your none existent kids. Like the one guy said, try to get a 4 year old to draw a circle. It is fairly challenging. If holding a pencil is a challenge then have a properly sharpened knife unsupervised is out of the question.

I briefly came back in and read some of the replies and saw everyone talking about when they got knife and shit. I got a stick and tried to teach him how to use a knife. He couldn't even unlock the blade to fold the buck 110 i was teaching him with. I got him to shave the bark off a stick and i was holding his hand. He doesn't have the wrist strength to use a knife by himself.

I understand that the boy scouts are gay and its okay if a child cuts themselves while learning. You have to cut yourself a few times to learn why safety is important. But you idiots who think that a child can just be given a knife and a gun and everything will be okay are fucking retarded.

I have personally witnessed that him being forced to be active has given him strength and motor coordination superior to children a couple of years older than him who stare into screens all day. he loves when i let him play with my tools even though he cant do shit with them. I even made a project with threaded holes and a bunch of nuts and bolts for him to assemble into it.

He just rode his bike down a hill and face planted into a propane tank and stopped crying as soon as i told him he was fine. The boy is not a pussy so spare me the insults.

I am not trying to be rude op and I hole you come back to see this but I think the idea alot of us are getting at and alot of experts in the feild touch on is that you should learn to step away and let the kid have fun just point him in the direction and turn him loose and you sit back and watch. Yes he may need some guidance but don't walk around with him or force him to do things like carving. Just present the opportunity to him and see if he takes interest

Take him fishing. Seriously it's one of the easiest things to get into. I went today and a lady was out there with her 4 year old daughter. They caught like 4 bluegill and the little girl was so excited each time. Pretty cute desu. Also the mom was a total babe.

Biggest thing I can tell you is DONT force it on him! My father used to drag me out fishing every single day for about 3 months. I got so sick of being outside, getting sunburned, doing nothing... and that ruined me from almost anything outdoors for several years. That and him dragging my mother out who couldn't fish for shit..

My mom used to lock me outside whenever I did anything bad. We lived in the middle of nowhere, nearest neighbors were a few miles down a dirt road. I learned a lot from just being in the woods alone until my mom let me back in, sometimes I was locked out for days. I eventually got a bright idea to make a shelter or "fort" in the woods for the colder or rainier nights. This shit when on until I was old enough to just live in the woods most of the time, mainly to keep away from my mom's deadbeat boyfriend. I was isolated for such a long time I had no social skills and only felt safe alone in the woods. I was the creepy quiet kid in school that always wore a size to big camo jacket but got decent grades so the teachers ignored me. Went to a community college for free and now I work in a state park, still have no social skills and barely speak to my coworkers.

But ya do what good old mom did and your kid will end up just like me. Sad and alone but at least he likes nature.

Plant & animal identification! Make a big list of all the local flora and fauna and make it an adventure for him to photograph them all. He'll learn about them at the same time.

Build shelters with him and have sleepovers in the backyard. Teach him how to cook foods and roast marshmallows. Typical kid things.

Trust me, he'll have fun and learn to love the outdoors.

I just take mine out there. He's six now. Been taking him since he was three. He's loud at times, he occasionally beats on things with sticks, and he runs forever, as long as I can still see him. We tend to go to places that don't have much traffic.
Just get them out there. That's it. Mine love looking for bugs, and flipping rocks to find spiders and other crawlers. Finding different plants, and feathers. Mushrooms. Listening games. Short. Sweet. To the point.
Show them why you like it out there, so they can try to emulate you. That's it, really. They see you're having fun, they will too.
My daughters three. I was bringing her out in a back pack thing. She hiked so many miles before she could ever begin to walk. When she was walking, before she could talk, we were out. A lot slower, but still out. Now she's three, and she's 50/50 on a hike, or the playground.
Just get them out. And bring snacks. Holy shit bring snacks. And hydration. Work your way into healthy, energy rich foods. They'll start to notice the difference, too.

Mine spends way too much time watching shit on YouTube, but loves out trips with dad. At this age everything is still mega interesting to him, so every trip is an adventure, all the bugs, animals, plants, fish, birds...
