I use one at home mainly for woodworking projects. Outdoors I feel like there are just better options. Like the other poster said, full tang is always better, and there are also more reliable folders available for pocket carry. That being said they're good knives and hold an edge very well.

I just picked up the #06 last week. Moved to the city and my belt knife stuck out to much. I got tired of all the questions so I bought the Openel. It didn't come particularly sharp but for thirteen bucks it was a good buy. I like the aesthetic compared to most other folders. My gf likes it for cleaning under her nails.

They are fine. Cheap and sharp, and they are nonthreatening but stylish if you care about stuff like that.

The blade is thin, so it's great for food prep. They really don't like moisture though. Even if you get the stainless version, frequent moisture will screw up the handle.

The lock can get stuck a bit so you really have to force it, which can be scary with your finger right next to a razor sharp blade.

They are amazing for the price. The ones with the wooden grips tend to get loose over time and flip open easily if you don't secure them with the metal ring. That's the only criticism I know of them. If that bothers you, then get one with plastic grip.

I have one its probably the least favorite of all my knives. I have 25 probably, leatherman, Gerber, spyderco, benchmade, kershaw, mora, etc. It just seems flimsy and cheap to me its also really hard to keep an edge on it.

Not locking. Poor quality leather sheaths. This was not the technology of that era, there was much more sophisticated folding and fixed knives available and in common use since the 19th century.

Both the 110 and Sodbuster have very strong, proven locks. Better locks than the Opinel has.

I specifically mentioned slipjoints not appealing to everyone but that in no way makes them bad.

The 119 and both the Old Hickory knives are fixed blade, and extremely good for the money considering they're readily available for under $20 which puts them in the same bracket as the Mora and Opinel.

No.6 is best knife for whittling, very easy to keep a razor edge on it with just regular stropping during work.
Also useful for working leather.
Very good knife overall, preople saying it's weak don't know what they are talking about, just don't baton on it and mind the tip.

It's too small to be useful, anything you would comfortably saw you can break with your hands.

Lack of clip is annoying, especially with the No.12 which is a little big for the pocket; No.8 sits in the pocket well. The lock is fine for an /out/ folder.

I got the stainless number 8. I drilled a hole at the back of the handle and put a small leather cord loop in it so it now tangles from my keys and is always with me. Has come handy numerous times.

Use no7 daily. Strips wires, cuts duct, hell cuts leather better then razor knife, reaches how to properly hone (gotta home regularly to keep razor sharp).

They can. It just can't be locking automatically or some such. I live under the similar laws. While I think they are still ridiculous you can still have a decent edc blade. Friction folders, manually engaged locks, and slipjoints are your friend and I've realized that they are really all most people need for edc.

I think in this case, "need" refers to the fact that it meets the requirements of a pocket knife, not that it should be an arbitrary cutoff for legality.

It's the knife you get when you turn 7. If you don't trust your kid you give him a rounded tip one. You always give them the carbon steel one so they learn to properly care for it even if you have a stainless steel knife yourself.

took it /out/ just a little for a stroll and a picnic in the redwoods today. i wouldn't mind the blade being about 1/2" longer, but otherwise so far 9/10, will use again. we'll see what repeated exposure to apple juice does to the hinge and lock area, though. i'm a little concerned about that.

I got a carbon steel in the hopes I could keep an edge on one since I have a lot of trouble keeping knives sharp. It rusted up super quick and sometimes the knife would get stuck and wouldn't fold out I think from sweating and the wooden handle expanding. good knives all around.

I'm on your guys side in thinking knife law is pretty fucking stupid because I know that a guy committing a crime isn't going to be using a benchmade but probably some $1 knife instead since most of em are going to stab with it anyway. Also may not even be a knife, but shit like hammers or a steel ruler with an end chopped off and other end taped up.

I use an Opinel no.8 for cooking and a full tang knife for everything else; batonning, cutting cord, etc. Opinel's are very good cheap knives that are razor sharp and I highly recommend them.

it's ok, but for what it is imo you're far better just buying a normal opinel

I've had this one for about 12 years, it never leaves my daybag.

I've posted the pic a few times in the past, but to me it really captures the knife well, you can use it to cook and eat with and cave something delicate like that spoon as soon as you've given it a wipe after eating

I've been into knives for years, and I have a shit ton of them, ranging from Kabars to CRKTs to Moras and even Helle. Opinel was an eye opener for me. I mean, they were ugly, and too fragile in my eyes. In the end I decided to try one after all (went for carbon steel), and holy shit are they good.

So with that, I put it to the haters; tell me one thing you can do with your knife that I can't do with the opinel. I dare you. I double dare you!

I've used my opinel to open a beer. Just don't deploy the edge, use the back of the blade folded in. Wouldn't even need a knife. Use the bottom of a bic.

If carving skis is a must for a knife, you've pretty much excluded 99.9% of all makes out there.
