So I've had this 0.8" thick, 1.7 lb milsurp CCF pad for over 10 years, and I was wondering if cutting holes in the thing to lighten it up would lower its R value.

I've slept on the thing in the snow, under a tarp, at -15C. I don't like potentially freezing my ass off because a puncture deflated my mattress and even if punctures weren't an issue I'm not spending over €100 on an oversized crisp bag.

I've slept on the pad in 15 degree temps. Which is equivalent to your -15. And far lower. And even worse for a night or two in Afghanistan. But I can assure you I preferred my inflatable every time.

Yea. Basic physics. The holes you cut are air, which is a good insulator, but if you really think that sleep in a hammock. You roll, the air changes.

A hammock compresses the insulation of your sleeping bag and without an underquilt or pad you are directly exposed to convective cooling by the surrounding air. There would be no convection through the holes in a CCF pad that's lying on the ground.

Yes, cutting holes from the center would lower it’s R value. People confuse circulating air,which is a poor insulator, for dead air space, which is a good insulator. You can see this in comparing R values of uninsulated and insulated inflatable air sleeping pads. You can cut the edges of closed cell foam mats so it’s more human shaped and you can sacrifice leg length if you really wanted to save weight.
