what exactly is tanto good for? Is the knife more durable for opening cans and penetrating stuff in general, or what?

The tanto has no redeeming characteristics. It is made in order to sell crappy knives to mallninjas. It has no belly and the transition from main blade to the tip is awkward. Lack of belly means it won't draw cut well. That goofy transition means it can't slice well. The tip isn't stronger than a well made drop, spear, or trailing point.

the ONLY tanto style blade i had was the kershaw blur tanto, really sucked for cutting, i remember trying to use it to slice meat for jerky and it was just annoying, no belly at all.

i returned it and picked up a regular kershaw blur(think its a recurve blade style) and am much happier, good for skinning bunny wabbits.

thought all the mall ninja talk was just people who didn't like the look, never realized how important the belly on a knife was until i had tanto, will never again buy one, but im just 24 and have allot to learn... should have listened to the old men on /k/

the tanto blade is for cleaning kills while hunting. The tanto shape moves the blade around bones when gutting so it is incredibly smooth. Its not very good for skinning though, I still prefer my bowie over my tanto.

I have a couple of traditional trapper pattern pocket knives with blades around 3.25". I use one of them when I clean and skin game, everything from deer to rabbit. You should try a really sharp small knife once, you might really like it.

Your right,
The Ontario is actually longer than 3 of the machetes.

All of the knives listed are choppers. Not a single one will do any sort of detailed work.

Something called a camp knife should be able to clean a fish, camping isn't just processing wood.

but thats wrong
tanto grind is something thought up for mallninjas, actual japanese swords and tanto daggers all have a curve, although you can see where the inspiration came from, but there is always a curve, anything else woulde be meaningless since their swords are MADE for cutting

You cunts don't even know what tanto is for... Ugh.

The odd shape of the blade makes it best suited for punching through armor/leather/thick cloth.
It's purely a fighting knife.
The guy who said it was good for going around ribs when skinning or whatever, was right, but that isn't at all what it was designed for. It's more then proficient at stabbing through things.

Tanto tips were invented to keep the tips of thin, long, and brittle Japanese swords from breaking off. It has no place on a pocket knife. On the other hand, the reverse tanto design, ironically, does everything that the tanto tip is supposed to do, while remaining viable as a blade you can use.

The fact that those tanto knives in your picture don't have a sharp angled transition like this Benchmade folder means nothing. You don't need the full blade edge to be smooth for the blade to be useful for other things besides stabbing through leather Japanese armor. Tanto is tanto.

Medieval Jap sword-smiths used very hard, very brittle steel. This kind of blade design was how they made it work in a slashing weapon. The tanto was always just a mini version of the katana. They had real knives too for actual food preparation and other kinds of work.

I didn't disagree with that, because I agree with it. I simply mentioned there are better blade shapes for stabbing available now. I meant to imply anyone thinking of getting a new tanto for a stabber is barking up the wrong tree. Then again, it's your money and you can do anything you want to with it.

The reason is simple: it's much easier to produce.

The first "tanto"-style knives were Chinese in origin. Big surprise. Some company figured that it could cut down production time greatly by going from a smooth, round adge between the blade and the point to a simple two part straight sharpening.

Some high profile companies later adopted it thinking it looked cool, hence many people started to think that maybe, it served some purpose seeing how these great companies suddenly started to release several tanto models.

Well, I have yet to find a single reason that would justify its very existence other than "it's easier to produce".

Spiffy. What's something to be used in a combat role by combat personnel got to do with going /out/? I've never met anyone who'd been in the military very long who didn't have a crappy/inappropriate to task equipment story. This should spawn plenty.
