I'm going tent camping this weekend at a campground that is pretty remote. It has black bear activity.

- Am I safe storing my food and trash locked in my car, or will the bear smell it?
- Should I buy bear spray, or is pepper spray fine if it tries to get into my tent?
- I have a 9mm handgun for protection. Would shooting it with hollow points stop an attack, or piss it off and increase its aggression? I'm under no illusion that they would actually kill the bear.

All the websites I see say it's okay to store a cooler in your car though. Is that wrong? What else would I do?

Because I'm not sure if I trust the advice of those sites. You are saying the opposite but I'd like to hear some reasons why, and what I should do instead? What do you recommend?

I need to leave my food in my car because... otherwise it will be outside of my car.

everywhere in the sierra nevada in ca the advice is don't leave food in your car because bears can and will pull your doors open, and i have literally seen it happen (back when i used to car camp a medium sized black bear ripped open the back of a station wagon; i've never seen anyone pack and leave so fast after that). but i don't know if your local bears have that knowledge or skill.

but why do you need food at your car at all? and if i needed to leave food by my car for some reason i'd set up a bear hang a couple hundred yards away.

These are black bears in the Appalachians. Not sure if they have the skills.

I don't get why you're asking why I need to leave food in my car. I don't *need* to, but I have to keep it somewhere. I'm asking for recommendations.

oh, you're going CAR camping. gotcha. either a) use provided bear boxes. b) set up a bear hang, or c) leave the food in your car to keep it out of the hands of raccoons, and for bears put all your empty beer bottles on the roof/hood/bumper, and if anything big tries to get in they'll knock off the bottles which'll wake you up, then run out and chase the bear off (i know it's hard to decipher tone online, but that is not sarcasm or bait).

but if the official site for the canpground says leave it in your car you're probably okay. no way someone would risk the lawsuit of suggesting that if there was a real risk of bears tearing shit up.

Depends on how common bears are and how many people you have, 'black bear country' is not at all the same as 'black bear in area'

No you don't need it and 9mm will just piss it off and make it attack you then bleed out 6 hours later.

Don't worry too much about black bears, they're scared of humans and unless they're habituated or you get really really unlucky they're going to bolt at the first sign of you

Headed up to my property for the weekend. Lots of black bears up there. Never had a problem keeping food in the trunk of my car. Also, if you're using 9mm ditch the JHP and go with FMJ. You want maximum penetration if the need should arise.

If you're truly not comfortable keeping the food in your car, do a bear hang like other anons suggested. Good luck and have fun!!

i was once doing surveying on timber plot in a very remote area and was walking on an animal trail looking at my trimble. i looked up and i saw a bear and two cubs walking towards me about 50 ft in front of me. they were all looking down at the ground too which was funny. i stopped and yelled at them and waved my arms like a retard and they stopped, turned and ran like they had just seen the devil. it was pretty funny to see their reaction and the little cubs follow

Get a bear canister, put your food in it, lock it in your trunk. This is sorta over kill but it’ll work.

Confirmed, I camp in az bear country all the time, and I have scared off black bears by cussing at them. The shotgun with buckshot is for mountain lions (if I had a chance to get a shot off) and the mogollon monster.

This is true until they get a taste for human food. After that they’ll do anything for it until the bear eventually has to be put down. There’s some bad ones near me this year. One cornered a guy from Brooklyn who was eating in a leanto (against the rules) and charged him. The guy had his pack ripped apart and all his food eaten. The forest ranger keeps shooting it with beanbags and pepper spray but it hasn’t left yet.
These fuckers have also figured out how to open the clear-blue bear canisters with the twist lids.
