good question for >>>/an/ but my understanding was the prominent shoulder hump indicates it's a grizzly, although i'm sure the bear's posture at the moment of the photo could impact that interpretation. cross-breeding apparently is also possible

Shoulder hump had me thinking grizzly bit it's pelt was super dark, almost black.

This is a Kodiak . this is not a black bear.

grizzlies color varies but the hump does not. also the shape of his lips is a giveaway.

ive had multiple bear encounters, all black .

...not to mention the hump and the decidedly pronounced dish face...black bears have almost a straight line from forehead to nose...Griz have deeper dish faces.

the pictures are too crappy to accurately determine color.

My thoughts too, if you look up pictures of grizzlies from the side vs black bears from the side the shape looks way more like grizzly.

Albertan here. Run into lots of both up here where I fish. grizz tend to have that large shoulder, shaggier fur, and a squarish muzzle. Your bear is very dark, but looks like a grizzly. The ones we have up here are quite blonde. Seeing the last pic it is definitely browner than a black bear would be and it has shaggy fur with the hump and doesn't have the pointed muzzle of a black bear.
