I just moved from Texas to Berkeley to do my PhD. I've never seen snow before but I want to take my dog to go on a 1 night camping trip in desolation wilderness (maybe 3-5 miles in 3-5 miles out) this thanksgiving.

The problem is that I've never encountered snow before because I'm from fucking texas.

What do I need? I have a decent tent, thermalite pad, and a 0degC rated sleeping bag and goretex hiking shoes.

Anything else I definitely need for hiking in maybe 1-2" of snow?

I have an AWD car with all-weather tires. Do I still need to buy chains? I'm going to try to go somewhere well traveled so hopefully the roads are clear. Would calling the park service be helpful?

All-weather tires are fucking useless, and the drivetrain of your car doesn't matter. Unless there are no storms in the forecast, either don't go, or get some proper winter tires. Also, even if storms don't come, your all-weathers can fuck you up. Winter tires are made of a softer rubber, so they grip better when it is cold. Your tires will be harder than they should be, so they will have less traction than normal.

chains are required to carry in national parks and at elevation when it's snowy, even where it's plowed. yes, they do do checks when it's snowy, but usually awd with mud & snow tires (they'll say m+s or something on the sidewall) will get you through without chains on. i've never had to put chains on my crv.

noone can predict how much snow will be on the ground by that time, it could range from none to a shit ton

if you google current snow depth national forest, it gives you this cool google map esque view of different places and tells you the snow depth there

if the snow is deep youre going to need snow shoes unless you enjoy misery and pain, also your dog is going to have a harder time traversing snow so youre gonna have to manage it's physical needs/state

the actual camping part isnt too bad, like other anons said, you want some kind of foam or air mattress to insulate you from the ground, also thermal layers (you will likely only wear these at night or when you sleep because when youre hiking youll be plenty warm)

your best bet is to check the weather and pray its sunny and nice for the time you plan to go, i have no experience camping in a winter shitstorm but i imagine its not alot of fun if you dont know what youre doing(and potentially life threatening), also it makes traveling complete ass because you will have to wait for snowplows and use snowchains to drive anywhere

your best bet is probably going to be to stick to lower elevations (6K feet maybe) and just try to enjoy the scenery, like other anons have said around that time of year there may be alot of snow and as you go up in elevation the snow depth is gonna deeper

finally, ill shill a video by nutnfancy "how not to suck at winter camping", find it on youtube, its pretty decent at explaining winter camping

holy shit what a bunch of lily livered faggots there are in this thread. do you sissies never push your comfort zones? op, i'm a fair weather boy, and i've been to snow exactly twice since i was about 12. the first time i drove my crv with my regular tires on (i practiced putting chains on at home, didn't need them). just gentle on the gas, brake and steering and you'll be fine. the second time was in 2016, which was the biggest snow year in the high sierra in decades, and i went on a 4 day backpacking trip literally the day sonora pass opened up to 12000' with my brother who knows even less about snow than i do. spoiler alert: both trips i turned out fine and learned a shit ton. just check the weather forecast before you go, use sunscreen and wear uv400 sunglasses (you can burn from the uv reflected off the snow), make sure your sleep system is sufficiently warm, bring good, fatty food for dinner (comforting to eat and keeps you warmer over night), and microspikes are fucking tits.

OP, you should seriously consider Mt. Rose in Incline Village, NV (It's in Tahoe, about 3.5 hours away). It will give you the most perfect (and safest) winter experience you could hope for. The route there is perfectly paved, salted, and plowed throughout the year. You have an incredible parking lot you can park in and then hike 4 miles to the Mt. Rose Wilderness area where you can do wherever the fuck you want. The Wilderness area is actually right along the actual Mt. Rose trail which starts 1 mile from the summit (10.8k ft) so you can hike 4 miles, camp out, and then summit early morning for the sun rise if you want. The trail is well traveled enough to actually do it by yourself and the wilderness area is far enough to where you can be alone and really enjoy yourself. The area is beautiful; it's flat, expansive, and quiet.

Where I went there was 500+ ft of elevation change, if you're in shape it should be no big deal. But remember the air is a lot thinner up there and it's gonna be cold. I'd bring handwarmers for your armpits/kneepits.

I have no idea what the desolation wilderness is being from the northeast, but it looks like it’s in the sierras which gets a shit ton (that’s the scientific term) of snow every year. And if it’s not snowing, it’ll be a cold rain which is even worse. I’m not saying don’t do it, because you should, but do a couple day hikes first retard
