Man, I could rant about this for hours.

PEOPLE, if you are going to catch and release, you have to be SUPER FUCKING CAREFUL. Bass and most other warm water fish are fairly hardy but trout cannot handle being gripped with a towel and their throat yanked out.
Keep the fish in the water, use barbless hooks, and play them properly or else you might as well take em home.

Also lets stop this stigma if keeping fish. If its bleeding and very tired, its not going to survive, so im going to take this one single brown trout so that it doesn't go to waste.

This. There ought to be a basic and enhanced version of fishing licenses. Enhanced would allow you a single under size limit if you could determine that it would not survive if released. Enhanced would likely be a educational course to take with only the cost of the course added and allows you to buy an enhanced for the rest of your life at no extra.

Read the actual abstract. They only tested 10 fucking fish, all from one species. And it literally says it was unclear whether their findings showed there would a significant impact on survival. Incredible study.

Also, use circle hooks that are barbless. Those automatically hook in the corner of the mouth (99% of the time) making it easy to remove and help the fish survive.

Also if you're unhooking a fish but having trouble, leave the line in the water so the fish can catch its breath and if it still fights it has a better chance of unhooking itself.
