Fjallraven stuff is expensive, but it is well made and they don't cut corners. they're better value when you look at more extreme cold weather stuff.
You can find cheaper hats, but if you want a good one get wool.
And yes they're taking advantage of the kanken fad, thats capitalism.

No, seriously, if you need a wool hat, knit one for yourself. It will fit you the best (since it's custom made for your own head) AND it will be top quality for literal pennies.
And if you can't knit, ask your mother/grandma/aunt/whoever

an icelandic family member of mine use to knit me wool socks, gods be damned they are the comfiest things in the world, she was a master at knitting, more support then any hyped hiking sock, more breathable then any fancy material, and so comfy when the chill kicks in. damn i miss her. she was so happy knowing i loved her socks and used them everytime i went /out/ ever since her sons died in fishing accident. she died as peacefully in her home as i feel when wearing those socks around a campfire

Sailor here, knitted hats and sweaters with turtleneck are the best thing ever. Sure, once they get wet, you're fucked, but the same goes with pretty much every other clothes you can wear under your oilskin.

Since they were bought buy an outdoor consortium they have gone downhill, they recently released a "collection" in collaboration with Acne to capitalize on hipsters loving both brands these days.

They do still make some things that are of good quality like their jackets, pants, tents and sleeping bags but if you can't get one on sale or second hand there are cheaper options that are just as good.

I own one of their jackets, and a friend of mine recently got one of their packs and a pair of their vidda pros
The jacket is a windproof, water resistant, breathable outer layer and it works pretty well, doesn't weigh much and is pretty comfy, keeps me dry in light precipitation and drys fast

Their gear is well made but suffers from this pull away from function in favor of aesthetics. If you want to have that bushcrafter old time look with middling level of practicality then they're the brand for you. Honestly youd be better off paying similar prices for way better gear from brands like outdoor research or marmot, but you shouldn't regret buying gear from them as long as it's not their lifestyle pieces, which can really be said for any outdoor clothing company.

It really doesn't. It retains more warmth than some fabrics, but it still becomes a shitty insulator when wet. Even cheap polar fleece is better than wool when it comes to wet warmth, and it dries much faster too.
