It's a bad idea overall, I myself use it only in situations where losing it means it's fucking lost, like when climbing, or crossing a bridge.
You don't really need any braiding, only two knots: a cow hitch to the handle, and some bend knot of your liking to tie the two together; a simple overhand knot is enough for me.
I also tie a metallic bead to the end, so the lanyard is always hanging down; quite useful when it's strapped to my back, I can easily find the lanyard hanging down and thus find the handle.
