I have registered a couple 20-acre mining claims in my area, just gives me mineral rights to pan for gold on public land way off the beaten path, but with some paperwork so the park service folks don't try to chase you off as a vagrant. It's my /out/ experience, I go to each one a week or two each year, camp, enjoy the stream and wilderness, pan for fun, maybe get $200 in gold flakes.
Here's the thing: BLM requires that you physically "stake" the property boundaries, either by digging 4x4 posts, sinking a solid plastic post, or just stacking a cairn monument at each corner.
I have six claims around the state. Every fucking year at least one of them has the cairns scattered by some idiot who buys into the cairn kicking meme. I know it was started just as a joke, but some /out/ists don't seem to know that and it's now part of their SJW repertoire.
