What sorts of things are necessary for a single night of camping in 45 degree nights?

This is my first time camping and I’m going with some pals to stay overnight.

Is a sleeping pad and sleeping bag necessary?

Necessary, no, but you'll not regret taking them. People rarely have proper clothing to be staying out all night. Like do you own anything that's down or wool?

Necessary, yes. If it's your first time camping you don't want to have to build a raised bed, lean-to and long fire. That's way too advanced. Just bring a tent, CCF pad, and sleeping bag appropriate for the night temperature. Wear fresh, clean underwear to bed. Bring bug spray. Don't wear cotton. Don't wear your rain jacket near a camp fire. Don't dry your boots by the fire. Down jackets are a nice, lightweight option to throw on when you're taking a rest.

Well, the weather looks to be nice 63/45 highs and lows. I wasn’t really worried about being overly chilled throughout the night. But I’ll definitely pack my clothing accordingly. Thanks for the tips.

I think my friends have an air mattress for their tents and I’ll use a cheap pad and bag for my tent. It’s only a single night so I’m not extremely worried about it.

If you have proper clothing, you can just sleep out under the stars. There's been many times I've woken up covered in snow or frost. Then again, something has changed with most clothing and gear since the 1980s and doing that isn't advised unless you have some good well-insulated clothing.

I wear a proper wool lumberjack coat thing from swandri, Its wool with some kind of water repellent treatment and it takes about 2 hours of heavy rain before you feel damp. Main thing is they are tough and don't rip on branches or get melted easily round fires. Its my favourite thing to wear for forestry and gardening work in scotland where we have very rainy conditions. Much more breathable than any waterproofs aswell

Those plaid coats are known round here as a Nova Scotia dinner jacket. Get one big enough to fit over a warm hoodie my go to outdoor work set up. If it rains real hard or slushy snow I’ll put on a rain jacket over all of it.

It's not just about something softer than rocks to sleep on. Lying on the ground compresses the insulation of your sleeping bag and the ground su is the heat right out of you through conduction. The weight of a cheap CCF sleeping pad or one of those novel insulated air mats is easily compensated by not having to carry such a heavy sleeping bag. Old-fashioned uninsulated air mats don't insulate and self-inflating mats are heavy.

You can get one for under 5 bucks and sharpen it, it'll be just fine. After all, axes are considered simple hand tools.
Bonus points if you rescue a axe head from a local flea market and patch it up using a custom made handle that you whittled yourself.
