Northern Virginia, by Great Falls, has the Billy Goat Trail. The Virginia side of the Billy Goat is a bit pleb tier, but the Maryland side in Cadderock makes for a great day hike. It's hiking along cliff faces and when the river is high you have to jump from rock to rock. There is also a rock scramble which is super neat. In Virginia you can explore Appalachia, become a camp counselor at Goshen, and have great access to West Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland (for fishing.) You may get some bad reactions by being British if you go deep into Appalachia, though nothing will be Deliverance levels of bad. I've had some mountain folks act like I'm a foreigner when I said I was from Richmond.
