Their herds cost a lot of money, if they wanted to cash in, they could easily sell their animals and get a city apartment or two, but why would they? They just work with animals all day every day, eat fresh meat and dairy, and if a bad winter hits and herds have nothing to graze on, they either buy feed or are forced to live in the city.
I've been working on gf's farm all weekend, had to tear down a structure and carry some junk around, took me 6 or so hours of non-stop intense work (wanted to finish early), it beats office or trade work any day mainly because I was outside. Now imagine just messing with animals all day. I wonder how this would work out in US, you'd probably need a ton of grazeland, maybe it can be bought for cheap if it's far from civilization?
