If you're sure it can't be a garter snake, I live in NJ, so your guess as to what else it would be

How did you get bitten by a garter snake? I've probably picked up hundreds of those little guys over the course of my lifetime. Every single one of them shit on me, and it was a lingering stench, but never got bit. But, I've been bit by plenty of other snakes: northern water snakes, black rat snakes, bull snakes, and eastern milk snakes.

I never got bit but a couple tried when I was a kid, until I learned not to hold them so tight. They don't seem to mind being handled if you keep a loose grip though.
