Why would a car camper need to know all that? Because an outdoorsman isn't much of a thing. I think perhaps you mean, "woodsman"? Which is someone who lives or works in the woods/forest. Notice how it differs from an outdoorsman who is someone that just goes innawoods for fun.

There's a huge difference between knowing 95% of the plants you see in your area and 95% of the species. I guarantee you mean the former because ive been to school for ecology and even my most knowledgeable professors we're limited to certain kingdoms. I've never met anyone who knew insects, fungi AND plants (including grasses and mosses). Also, in Wisconsin our state flower is the Violet and there are over 90 species that often hybridize. It's literally impossible to taxonomically identify each of these species in the field. Same can be said about many genera of grasses.

There literally isn't a person in Ecuador who can identify 95% of the species there. 95% of the species haven't even been discovered. Sorry OP, but I do this for more than just fun and you're not being realistic. Instead of bullying people you should probably humble yourself.

To clarify:

If you live in northern hardwood first, transitional hardwood forest or Boreal forest, you can learn ~95% of the plants in an ecosystem if you know ~150 species. You will have to generalize many grasses and mosses by just knowing their genus name (ex: sphagnum spp.). Things can start to get tricky at the landscape level when wetlands and lakes get involved but getting a general idea of genus names is a good goal for recreational/herbalist purposes.

UW- Stevens Point student taking dendro. Our quizzes are only twigs, no form, site or bark to help ID. Good news is we only have ~50 we have to be able to ID this way. It's pretty stupid to have to try and ID paper birch by twig when the bark is everything but saying it's scientific name out loud. Haven't counted how many trees in total we are learning.

We get between 6-12 trees a week. Every class we walk outside for ~2 1/2 hours looking at all the current weeks trees with 5 quizzes mixed in throughout the walk. He can pick any tree that we have learned in any of the previous weeks and we have to know family genus and species spelled right for every one or we lose points.

I don’t really enjoy it tbqhwy

I tried once but I couldn't find the first tree I saw by looking it up with some branching akinator style search of deciduous/coniferous, bark and branch characteristics, leaf shape/pattern, cones/berries and I gave up. I did identify the tree that kept dropping tiny pinecones on my head while camping though it was an eastern hemlock which I found confusing because hemlock is also a fucking bush

Just part of enjoying and appreciating the great outdoors. If you're in an emergency situation it could be useful to recognise different flora and fauna, what is useful for what, where different things propogate etc.

But I think it's just about having a well rounded understanding of your world and environment.

You can optionally study for another year and secure a technical specialization (international trade, GIS, mechanized felling solutions...) to have a higher salary but the key word here is "optional"

not its not worthless. I dont know many names but i have been very successful farming using agroforestry practices. I can grow more shit than anyone ive ever meet and I am currently planting lumber trees in a 10 acre woodlot with good success. im planting walnuts and maples.
