hi /out/, /biz/ here
sold a bunch of crypto last december and january, I bought a 100 acre property (pic related) in atlantic canada, it's close to the ocean and it's a plant zone of 5
I have a few hundred thousand in cash to live off for the next few years, I will need an income in the future and hope to have it be partially or fully from the land I own, don't know how to do it though

saw this video about maple syrup production, claims you can get up to 300 gallons of maple syrup per acre

if I could get 1000 liters of maple syrup per acre, and sell it for $5 a liter I could live pretty well off 10 to 20 acres doing it
don't know how to do that though, is it just buy some maple trees, clear the land, grow a bunch of clones from cuttings on the trees and then in a few years install a vacuum system? anyone produce maple syrup?

also saw this video about ginseng

guy says that ginseng and maple trees grow well together, if I had established maple trees I could then have some ginseng on the undergrowth level

of the 100 acres, only 12 are considered 'cleared' most of it's a forest that looks like this, I doubt there's much value in the trees, someone mentioned

so if the soil is shit (probably is) then I can do that, there's a lot of blueberry production in the area, but I'd rather not do something that requires that much labour

how hard is it to clear land? the trees are small enough that I think I can do most of it myself, I know I'd need something to pull the trees, looking at getting one of the smaller kubota tractors for that, also need to get a brush hog attachment to keep cleared land clear
If someone could give some specifics it would be helpful, I think I could do an acre or two a month if I worked 40 hour weeks? will probably have to hire assistance

salal berries are considered to have the second highest antioxidant levels in berries, some cranberry is higher, salal grows natively on the west coast, going to try growing them, people spend $10 a liter on pomegranate juice so I know there's a market for that kind of stuff

I do maple syrup from time to time. The sap to syrup ratio is 40 gallons of sap to 1 gallon of syrup. The rendering cost is quite a bit, but the maple syrup commands a high price. If you have the correct equipment it is easy to do. If you have the trees, why not do it? It can be very seasonal depending on where you live. If the nights are not properly cold and the days only so warm then you won't be able to do it. I've not been able to do it for a few years now due to shitty weather.

Ginseng takes forever to grow, but is a good long term crop. There are laws that govern their harvest in some areas so look them up. People who would buy it from you will know stuff about that.

If your weather is okay, you can grow sorghum and make sorghum syrup. It's syrup ratio is only 10 gallons of sap to 1 gallon of syrup. You'd get about 200 gallons of syrup per acre.

honeybees for honey are easy enough and a good time fill in between other jobs. Though, you may need to plant something like clover for them. It depends on what your area has.

Very hard. Don't fuck around, rent (don't buy!) proper equipment to do it and hire people to help. Stay on top of everyone doing it so they don't fuck up the land. There's nothing worse than someone with a machine who doesn't know shit about drainage making ruts in all the wrong places.

Goats are great for scrub clearing. You can milk them, sell the kids, and butcher for meat.

doubt I can grow sweet sorghum in canada, going through a book right now on what grows in zone 5

I've considered honey, but don't really like bugs, I'll have to talk to a local beekeeper to see what's possible production wise

I've looked into goats and sheep, seem to be too much of a commitment, the way the law works is if you fail growing plants you wasted a bunch of time and money, fail growing livestock and you can go to jail, I'd like to be able to go away during some of the winter, seen some videos on quail and rabbit, I'll try having some this or next summer

The sap only rises in certain weather where it is clear and the wrong temperature will ruin it. Basically, cold nights below freezing then warm sunny day never above 50F/10C.
