fortunately i'm not a homo, and i /out/ in both black bear and mountain lion country, and i don't pack so much as a slingshot for protection because i'm not a frightened little bitchboy and i actually understand wildlife behavior and probability.

You know this because that's what people who hike there frequently do.
...BUT... If you are camping out in Alaska or Yosemite where there are lots of bears and lots of aggressive behavior (bear attacks), then it would be stupid not to properly protect yourself. I live in one of those areas and have encountered many bears, so I always take a gun or bear spray, again, depending on exactly where I am going.

a) yosemite is in the sierra nevada
b) there are not bear attacks in yosemite
c) it is illegal to carry a gun in yosemite

though i do concede alaska is a good place to carry a gun. but for anyone in strictly black bear territory it's unnecessary.

You're not actually less like to be killed by a bear than lightning, you're just significantly less likely to encounter a bear than a lightning bolt. In comparison of total interactions with bears vs lightning bolts, bears are significantly more deadly than lightning.
