source: i have a fucked up knee and wouldn't have been able to go backpacking this year without them.

I hike with them. I typically hike in places that don't have much trees to get branches. Plus I use a one man UL tent that uses hiking polls as part of it's setup.

However if you are walking on flat land, that is not technical, I see no point in owning them.

This. Just spent a few days hunting fish in Yellowstone and would not have been able to go half as far as a did without them due to a fucked up hip.

And an infinite other things, you can just get a stick but it will never be as ergonomic nor lightweight.

I use them to clear the path and and see if there's anything where I shouldn't be putting my feet. Not so much for what you would do in a otherwise well traveled trail.

you must have lighter weight plants than where i go, because my poles do fuckall against brush in that situation for me. when i need to make a path my poles get packed away.

hell yea, you have no idea.

great for uphill when you have a heavy pack or are too tired.
great downhill on slippery gravel and terrain
great when snowshoeing
can use them as an additional pole for a tarp
can use them for deadman anchor in snow camping

plus they're dirt cheap.
