Hey /out/, /sci/ here, I’ve been thinking about what natural saps/oils might be able to be used as a biofuel.

I know next to nothing about them but I’ve been fascinated by the Australian Eucalyptus tree especially after seeing that greentext about “le ebin Australian shitpost 200 years in the making XDD”, and I’ve been thinking, could Eucalyptus oil be used to drive a turbine?

The most simple configuration I have in mind is just using eucalyptus oil set on fire to turn water into steam, but I’m wondering could there be any other applications to make eucalyptus oil mimic gasoline to drive a piston engine?

Also, what other plants produce flammable liquid/oil?

There are a few papers online suggesting the use of eucalyptus as a biofuel or petrol substitute. One article states that WA already uses eucalypts for this purpose. I don't have time to read them but I can give links and copy parts of their conclusions.

Unfortunately I can't find much on the use of eucalypts for energy production, rather than a petrol substitute/additive.

the Brazilian Copaifera langsdorfii, to use its botanical name, can be tapped not unlike a rubber tree, but instead of yielding rubbery latex it gives up a natural diesel. According to the nurseryman selling the trees, one hectare will yield about 12,000 litres annually. *Once filtered—no complex refining required, apparently—it can be placed straight into a diesel tractor or truck.

Birch bark is full of oil that can be harvest through distillation. Leather tanned with birch oil becomes Juchten, which is a very durable and water resistant type of leather which can be used to make exceptional boots.

Conifers have a higher amount of volatile components so they would probably be a better option.
The most common solution used right now for biofuel is turning sugarcane into ethanol though.

There was an article in The Conversation about this very topic. Turns out you can extract a bio-diesel like fuel that would spin a turbine engine. The authors quoted a potential yield of 200kg of fuel per hectare per year of production.

This of course runs into the problems mentioned by this old mate >>1387559

I did the numbers and it turns out that at this yield rate, Australia would need to cultivate an area equivalent to current area dedicated to wheat farming in order to satisfy Australian domestic airline fuel consumption. This isn't even taking into account the energy required to farm and extract the oil in the first place.

IMO its never, ever going to be viable. We will find a way to convert CO2 and water from the atmosphere using nuclear energy into clean diesel before this ever becomes feasible on a large enough scale to make a difference.

If this is Picea Abies, then this definitely is frass excreted by a parasite that loves (to live in and kill) this tree (dendroctonus micans most likely, could be another one). And though coniferous trees produce a lot of resign, they generally deliver less energy through combustion than broadleaf trees like say oaks, for the same quantity of material. So even if they burn faster, in the long run it's not the most effective you can use to produce heat.
Plus the resin a real bitch to clean.

in fact they consume nutrients, fertilizers in particular, that cost more energy to make than the trees will produce.

nor is this some strange and miraculous thing- every time you convert matter to energy or vice versa you lose some of it, so the process with the greatest efficiency uses the least conversions.

It would be far more efficient to burn the natural gas that's being used to make fertilizers than it is to grow crops for biofuels over any time period longer than a decade.
