I was having a fire out back of my house, and there are tons of coyotes around my area, but I had my dog out there because my friends loved him and he spotted and went after a coyote that was maybe 100m away from us. Came out of it with just scratches, he didn't kill it but scared it off. Not that the coyote would have done anything, though, but he was still trying to protect us.
Another time, when he was maybe about two years old, my sister was walking him down the street because these two kids always harassed her. They started throwing crab apples at her and he started barking and jumping and scared them off.
He would also break up "fights" with me and my ex. We were never actually fighting, but she would just like jump on my back or we'd wrestle or something and he'd come whining and jumping and whoever the "attacker" was.
I can't speak for all German Shepards, but mine was truly fucking amazing. Train one well and he will be your best friend for the entirety of his life.
