What hiking boots do you guys recommend that are cheap? I want to start walking some trails and start taking pictures but I dunno where to start. What gear should I start with? I'd probably just bring a water bottle and some trail mix since I just want to do easy and short trails first. But as I move up what other gear should I get besides boots?

quit making excuses and just fucking hike. my brother literally backpacks cross country in the high sierra in ten dollar kmart knockoff vans. i've done 2 miles of crosscountry in fucking crocs. you can do a couple miles on your local groomed trail in whatever you have.

Just get some cheap aryat boots they are like 80 bucks and will last 2 years with everyday use. Pic related I hiked a 287 mile trip in with no replacement soles

If you’re doing “easy” trails on day hikes without a heavy pack, you could get by with trail runners or just normal running shoes. You probably don’t even need to buy anything. Any recommendations for boots I can use to hike 25 miles in a day with about 40 pounds of stuff in an arid area? There will be some sand. Bonus points for being lighter and cooler. What’s the terrain like - that’s a heavy pack but do you have to wear boots? Can you get away with (trail) running shoes and then gaiters to keep the sand out - it’d be a lot cooler than slogging through with heavy boots. Maybe try on the Salomon X Ultra 3’s if boots are a must - they’re less than 2lbs

Belleville 320 One Xero boots are wonderful, I've worn them all over the southwest and they're by far the most comfortable and cool boots I've found for desert hiking, plus they weigh less than a lot of sneakers. About $150 new or you can sometimes find surplus on ebay for <50.

I have $160 keens and $10 running shoes. I use the running shoes for 99% of my hikes. The only time I use my keens are if cold and water are involved...which is never here in California

You absolutely do not need boots to go /out/ and take some photos while you do some hike. Sure if it's cold and everything is wet it's nice to have a comfy pair of boots that will keep your feet dry but have in mind that if you're spending a lot of time /out/ in wet conditions your boots too will start leaking, there's no way around it, unless you wear rubber boots but have fun with all the perspiration.

tldr sneakers will do just fine 90% of time. Go /out/. Ditch that boomer mindset.

You only need boots on rocky terrain or while your carry a heavy pack. Its all about the ankle support, you could do anyting barefoot the boots are kind of safety equiptment which i highly recommend for beginners. Just look for some boots that are comfy, cover your ankles and you wont hit the front of the toebox while going downhill.

Listen everyone in this thread is going to tell you that you need boots, but they're wrong.

Boots are only necessary if you are:
>Hiking with a heavy pack for significant distance
>Hiking on rough terrain
>Hiking off trail

While boots are great and every dedicated /out/doorsman owns a pair, they are not necessary for basic dayhiking that OP has expressed an interest in. If OP starts dayhiking and likes it THEN he can get a fancy pair of boots so he can start doing harder trails but for now he'll be fine with a good pair of running shoes

I buy timberlands basically every year for like $120 on sale and they lose their waterproofness within said year

I haven't, yet. I had no idea something like nikwax existed.

you either get suede and nubuck spray for suede/nubuck boots, or if your boots are shiny smooth leather, then I think you waterproof them with a beeswax (I don’t have that kind of boots so I don’t really know). Nikwax makes different stuff depending on what you have.

Boots are something I don't think about cheapening out on cause it can really ruin your day if you get the wrong ones. Got a good sub 100 pair called Grafters or something that done the job
