What Can I do With Flowers

What would you guys recommend I do with a bunch of wildflowers?
Could I preserve them in a medium, like an oil?
Could I extract the colour and make an ink or dye?

I have extracted oils from rosemary and basil before; I am not looking to do that. I have also pressed flowers before, although if you have any neat ideas on how to do that besides the classic "big book smashy smashy" that would be brilliant.

Silica gel drying

need a tightly shut jar and silica gel dryer agent, put flowers in it, wait and voilà.
just remember to change the silica crystals (or re-dry them) when they turn from azure (dry) to pink (wet)

lived communally in mendo with some growers and the hippy girls had a pretty good setup doing this and reselling to restaurants and bakeries. they would make tinctures with the bud/hips of the flowers.

What method did you use to extract the oils from the rosemary and basil?

depending on the type you get, they might not even have indicators in it (or a different one). You can regenerate them by baking them at 100°C for a few hours, but I wouldn't do that in my kitchen oven

What sort of tinctures? That sounds like something fun to do.
I used water boiling distillation to extract the oils from the rosemary and basil. Stuff (and I mean STUFF) a lot of plant matter into a flask, fill with water, and boil on low heat. Condense that and purify via multiple distillations.
I've also done similar with oil fermentation and boiling on rose petals, but roses are a bit tricky imo so I don't play with those any more.

Could you go into some more detail on distillation because you use the word multiple times but what your describing is just boiling? If you dont want to buy a still you can make a budget one buy putting a big container on a fire with the plants and water in it maybe a third of the way up, then put a smaller empty container in ontop of the plants and water, cover it with some kind of lid that slopes down in the middle. The water boils then the steam condenses on the lid and drips down into the smaller container, will work alot better if you can cool the lid.

Also oil fermentation?

I suppose, by loose understanding of your vague instructions, that would work? I have lab equipment because I'm an amateur chemist, so I have flasks, burners, condensers... if you would like to learn more about "primitive" distillation (aka without specialized glassware) techniques, I saw a cool video on it the other day:

Of course, that is for purifying water and may have different results with this because it is an entirely different experiment. But, the video shows you the basics of "primitive" distillation. All those clay pots and wood "pipes" could be replaced like modern materials, like pots with lids, holes drilled in; PVC piping; a stovetop; et cetera.

I suppose "fermentation" was a terrible choice of diction on my part, apologies. The correct process would be described as "leaving it in oil, heating in boiling water, straining."

Ahh Now I see, by flask meant you meant the proper equipment. I've got a 70 liter still I just assumed you were an amateur so was offering a diy option. I thought you meant the kind of flask you keep alcohol in and was very confused. My mistake.
And fair enough, I did google oil fermentation and the only vaguely relevant thing was a website promoting spanish olive oil talking about fermented foods and oil (not together just that sun dried tomatoes in olive oil exist and so does kimichi and sour kraut SUPERFOODS!!!! wouldn't buying some of our oil be a good idea)

Also I'd assume using ethanol would be a fuck ton better than oil or water, just steep the plant material for a few days/weeks/months strain and dilute. Could be interesting to see how long is strictly necessary and at what point you start ... diminishing returns.(I'm retarded how do I use diminishing returns in that sentence? getting/ reaching/ to encounter )

I have performed the experiment with isopropyl alcohol, soaked for one night – it works pretty well.
