So I've been getting out lately into the woods, i have a small decent shelter made but i haven't been able to start a fire properly. I have a small firepit already setup, it's just getting it lit is the problem. Any advice?

Thats basically fire 101. Can you not get it lit at all, or just have problems keeping it going?

Build the structure of your fur before you actually light it. Most people do either a teepee or a square house looking thing, with the tinder in the inside that you’ll light. Get a lot of small dried branches before you light it, then double it.

How are you starting it? firesteel? flint/steel? lighter?

I've been doing alot of firesteel lighting (using back of the knife to strike sparks) and I can tell you that my main problem has been properly dry tender. It's damp in this part of TN so even the tulip poplar is damp. You gotta work the shit out of it to get enough fine fibers to light with a spark.

You probably need to see if there's any good tinder sources in the area. Maybe try charcloth or birchbark or something similar.

As a high-school kid I would go back into the woods behind my house to work on a shelter and always start a fire to work by. the forest was basically a cedar swamp so everything was either green and alive or rotting on the ground. I would take a handful of sticks and old man's beard and tuck it into a pocket so it would get warm and dry out, that works well if you have a 6-12 hour headstart. In the image above I like the lean to style the most, because air comes in freely from both sides and the flame flows right through your material. I also find it helps to use 4-5 times as much tinder as you thought necessary, and not fussing with it so much at first. Bundle small sticks and debris above it and give it a solid minute for the flame to heat the material before you start poking and moving it
