I've been doing alot of firesteel lighting (using back of the knife to strike sparks) and I can tell you that my main problem has been properly dry tender. It's damp in this part of TN so even the tulip poplar is damp. You gotta work the shit out of it to get enough fine fibers to light with a spark.
You probably need to see if there's any good tinder sources in the area. Maybe try charcloth or birchbark or something similar.
