Hi /out/. First time poster here.
So, the sticky says that /out/ is for, among other things:

>Outdoor survival, bushcraft, foraging, self-sustenance in nature, train-hopping, hoboism, etc.

Well, I have a whole bunch of money as 0 survival skill. What should I buy and learn how to use for when shit hits the fan? What safety/backup/whatever stuff should every man have in their house? Bear in mind that I am 18 and living in California, so I cannot get a handgun.

You don't need a gun. If what I assume correctly by what you mean with "shit hits the fan", then maybe a gun would be handy. But a hunting rifle would be much more appropriate but still probably exceedingly unnecessary.

One of the best ways to increase survival skill is through doing not reading. (though the latter would be important firstly if you haven't grown up with a father-figure teaching you shit).

I said teaching you. Its okay that he's a programmer - he's probably provided a pretty comfortable life for you (18 with "a whole bung of money"). A lot of people who live in rural areas learn a lot of their survival skills/ outdoors knowledge from their dad/ grandpa/ uncle/ pedophile/ whoever takes them into the outdoors for adventures and funtimes. If you missed that, reading some books and just getting /out/ and camping will teach you ample survival skills

I here you. I'll read up on this stuff. Is it easier to learn from reading about it or actually doing it? Because I have friends/family who I can go /out/ with, our I can just read.

tbh I'm not to sure. The list the first reply gave was probably good stuff to check out. What you should get is fieldguides to your local flora and fauna. One that has how to identify plants would be more adventagous than one that simply lists them. I have one for my local /out/ing area - but your area might not have one. if you're looking at survival one that includes/ is based around edibility would be good.

Not clear on what you mean by reference books for plant reference the above will work. If you are referring to camping and outdoor skills some starters I would recommend are
The Boy Scouts Handbook
The SAS survival Handbook
Wilderness Survival by Gregory J. Davenport
The Complete Wilderness Training Book by Hugh McManners
All of the above a good starting points for camping type situations. If you are leaning more towards the SHTF scenario stuff for beginners I would suggest
When All Hell Breaks Loose by Cody Lundin
How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It by James Wesley Rawles

The List >>139357 are all good titles although some are not great for beginners hence others that I listed.

I would suggest getting the dirt time above almost anything as most people learn best by doing in my experience. The majority of your urban type stuff and advice can be found on /k/ I hope this helps.

A means to regulate temperature and cook food. If you have natural gas you are halfway there just make sure you can use the stove top in the event of a power failure.
Food and water two weeks per person this is not something tough depending on water you can do beans rice and tuna or go with low sodium canned goods that contain their own water. Water is fairly easy if you have a hot water heater flush it beforehand and learn to kill the incoming water.
Sewage is something not many address but a bucket trash bags and some Aqua-Kem toss ins.
Further sanitation Bleach, for food prep vinegar and water,
Standard items tools, gas, oil for vehicle in vehicle.
