This >>1393586 just bleach the sponge once in a while and make sure to clean the sponge and ring it out so there's no water in it. They really need to dry out 100% once a week at least. Keep 3-4 of them on rotation to allow that to happen and they will last for years of use.

That’s more of a preventative to keep it from happening again. You’ll want to bleach it before you toss anyway, because a garbage can full of flies is just as nasty.
