I've done work as a dude wrangler. Not real cowboy work, but you get to ride horses and make up bullshit stories to tell guests. Ranches start hiring around December for work season starting in late spring

I’ve done real cowboy shit but I’ve been thinking of getting a summer wrangler job to learn the ins and outs of that business. I might just be dreamin’, but I’ve been thinking of doing something similar in Africa for a while.

I don't know what kind of opportunities you'd have in Africa, but it sounds interesting. Might as well check it out. I'm planning to do a four week solo horse trek through Mongolia in the spring, but I'm open to the possibility of staying there indefinitely if the conditions are right

140 years ago in the southwestern US "cowboy" often did equate outlaw or rustler. Cattlemen or rancher were used to refer to lawful cattle herders in that region, since the "cowboys" in the sw were all killing each other and didn't have much to do with actual cattle herding.

Grew up working on a cattle ranch and a horse ranch owned by my two uncles. Worked there until I saved up enough money to go to college.
That life sucks and I hate cows and horses with a passion now. Hogs are still the worst though.

My dad also grew up doing that cowboy shit and really resents it. I got into cowboying after I graduated high school. I really like cowboy shit but I want to do other things, too. It does seem like a trap for a lot of people born into it.
