What's your favorite tree /out/?

Mine's the white birch.
Driving through northern Minnesota, miles and miles of pure birch forest passing by. Nothing like it.

Eucalyptus pauciflora is pretty nice tree. Dont think I have a fav. But the snow gum always gets me excited, especially when they're multistemed. Beautiful coloration

which is why we end up with biodiversity situations. Its not so much that tho, if they went I wouldnt notice. I've always been more partial to native species I guess, and if not native its genearlly gotta be pretty cool.

but man, thats a pretty extensive wipe out. What species has filled in the niche?

The Elm was the perfect tree for the Channel Islands. It could withstand the salt gales and strong coastal winds and the timber was ideal for boat building so it was planted everywhere.

Nothing really but Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), Evergreen Oak and various pines are planted in the place of Elms now. Ash does pretty well too but even that is under threat from disease now.

Its huge, not really sure what it is. Never been entirely sure with tree identification but I've been told Ironbark.

Willows have many uses so long as they're kept in control and tidy. They're a helpful plant when well restricted and make for an aesthetic dam.

More less an accent to house/city etc. Southern Manor laneways or by ponds on farms.

There's this old willow tree on a local trail though. Not very big, just old and twisted. Pocahontas stuff.

Thats the problem though. Rain washes seeds into waterway systems where they settle on banks, cause soil erosion, bank degradation, clot up the waterways with high leaf fall, and throw more seed down which develops further long.

WA isnt so bad, but over here in Vic is pretty horrible seeing what its doing to some streams, creeks and rivers. Hugely invasive and equally destructive. I agree they look pretty, but at the cost of them to biodiversity across differing trophic levels - its not worth it.

I was actually on a highschool biology camp. We were testing various effects on the trees distribution. We took note of soil pH samples, trunk/branch direction and wind strength/direction.

In the US, you have gray birch (short-lived pioneer species; not recommended as an ornamental) and paperbark birch (only grows at high altitudes south of Zone 5) for white-barked species.

That is not the reason for which I am partial to birch. I thought more people on /out/ would be aware of it's many wondrous uses.

Although I like a fair few of the more decorative small to medium trees people like sticking in their gardens (japanese acer is really cool) I prefer trees that have a use, ie. climbing, burning, fashioning eating utensils with big jaggy splinters.

Sorry if I seem to be derailing an ascetic values only thread, I jst think trees are pretty cool and more people should appreciate em

It's perfectly possible to grow them in the Eastern US, but the tree will crap out in about a decade or so. Enough time to get at least a crop or two of nuts. Unless you get lucky and it happens to be a particularly hardy specimen.

If you're not near any red oaks, the chestnut's odds of survival are improved since those are disease vectors.

I like all sorts of trees-- oaks, cotton willows, junipers, pines, etc. But there's just something about the Bald Cypress that's always stuck with me for some reason. Just a very primordial looking tree, spooky to be in a cypress forest at night in the swamp, awesome to explore with a canoe during the day.

I would like the Juglans/Carya family more if I were not in a neighborhood where walnuts and butternuts comprise almost 30% of the trees. Oaks are beautiful trees and mature specimens of (especially) Q. alba are an awe-inspiring site. Beeches are lovely but rarely seen unless you go to an undisturbed forest area. Norway Spruce and Douglas Fir (neither of which are native trees in the eastern US) get way overplanted.

Mulberries taste good, but unfortunately most are the invasive M. alba instead of the native M. rubra.

I have a few favorites.

Mesquite: earned my respect due to its hardiness and stubbornness (and 3"+ spines).

Cottonwood: The biggest native trees you can typically find in the desert. They look pretty, kinda like an Aspen you don't have to drive/hike for hours to appreciate.

Net Leaf Hackberry: Pretty bark, edible fruit, and leaves that feel like sand paper yet look normal.

Since I've gotten into arboral-tortur- er... bonsai, I'm starting to appreciate "trash" trees and invasive species. No one cares if I dig up a little chinese elm, jujube, tamarisk, tree-of-heaven. And if they die in my inept attempts to stunt their growth, nothing of great value is lost.

I found the perfect climbing tree a few years ago, it was an open-grown Sycamore so it had grown quite wide, and the bark was smooth enough to easily climb. There were a lot of carvings on the upper branches so I assumed it'd be there forever.
It got cut down six months ago. They put a road in.

maybe a Persian fringe tree I grew from seed. I'm from eastern PA too. I have so many favorite trees. And my family's got about 20 fruit trees. I put a lot of work into them, but Oh, peaches, apples, can't be beat.The squirrles get all the plums unfortunately

In the past few days our family has driven from the Texas Llano Estacado to Hot Springs, Memphis, Mammoth Cave, and now Great Smoky Mountains NP. If nothing else good had happened, seeing the mimosas in bloom among the trees would have been worth the trip.

Imma go wake everybody up now. You folks who come from forested lands should occasionally try to see them through the eyes of someone who doesn't live within 150 miles of a tree that wasn't directly or indirectly placed by man.

I love my mesquite and windy plains and the beargrass that gives home it's name, but I love to visit the trees.
