They are not warm, I thought they were cool when I was 18 - 20 and barley wore it. I guess they could be if you layer, they are water and wind proof but you have to do the leg straps if it's windy.

Their wool liner is a must for winter. They are just heavy as hell and a bit restrictive once you start layering more than that when things drop to -20F. The best part is that briars and thorns are not a problem at all.

Good for horseback riding in rain, need wool lining and good boots to keep warm inside, functions well as a waterproofing shell. Can be restrictive and heavy if well made.

I got an oilskin duster 2 years ago and I bloody love the thing! I live in central Ontario and it's fantastic for fall, winter and spring. Especially nice for cold wet times if you layer up underneath it and have a good hat. My brother and i find it useful to wear a hearty belt on the outside of our dusters to keep them tight and carry gear without it being awkward. pic related is from one of my solo ventures, the duster served me very very well. was also a nice ground sheet to lay on when i got warm

This board is great, I was just looking in my local work wear store here in Astoria for a winter and fall coat. I was really attracted to the oilskin waterproof coat made by outback trading. I wanted to look it up before dropping 170$ on it.
I'm wondering if there are any big downsides to the oil. Like, will it stain my car seat, or make my skin oily. Will it really last as long as I care for it, and is it fully waterproof?
I'm trying to go toward ultra durable and natural material clothing, this seems perfect, but IDK anyone who has had one.

Yes, there is always that possibility. Though, it will depend on how much you put on. Don't overdo it. You can overdo it easily. Read up on how to properly oil it.

Yes, but eventually fibers will break down so much that it will start falling apart. That is just friction and physics. They are fully waterproof, if not submerged, if they are properly oiled.

they have a slight oily feel to them.
havent noticed it stain or leave a mark anywhere
i wear them while motorcycling when its cold and they are supreme comfy and have kept me dry so far through light/mild rain
the only thing that sucks to them is that they are real 'murican fit. i'm quite tall 6'6" and the arm length of even the largest size leaves the arms too short for my liking.
but they are maximum comfy

Generally, no. They tend to be both heavy and can get too hot, so layering is still probably the better choice in cold weather. They could also snag on stuff pretty easily, and don't contribute anything unique just wearing thicker clothes/a jacket/more layers couldn't do, and not all long coats are treated to shed water. Trench coats and dusters in the modern day seem pretty firmly relegated to socially awkward middle schoolers, I'm afraid.

That having been said if you enjoy it and don't find it to be cumbersome or too hot, power to you. Not like many people should be seeing you in a forest or on a mountain anyway.

Actual dusters are specifically designed to not snag on shit, and are the GOAT horseback outerwear (which is what they were designed for).

The problem is they've been lumped into the same category as trench coats and most of the world sees them as Eric Harris 2.0 in the making, so the majority of companies that make them have cut back on features like the leg ties and the thickness of the material.
