Has anyone used the BioLite portable stove, latte, and charger set?

It's a $130 and looks good. I need it to make coffee and charge my cellphone and laptop when I go out camping. Are there any other units I should be looking at?

Unless It takes you ten hours to make a cup of coffee and you have a giant stack of wood, don't buy it. It's terribly inefficient. And why do you have a laptop when you go camping? Leave it at home, it will never charge on anything you would bring with you. You can charge a cell phone or camera with a mini solar panel designed for camping. Others will know the best model, I forget off the top of my head.

It's three pounds which is way too much for backpacking; so you're better off with a car charger and an AC power inverter which is probably cheaper than 130 dollars. Furthermore, I think a small solar array might only perform slightly worse for charging characteristics.

Yes, it works as advertised.

I don't think it's inefficient. It provides a single, powered USB port, and it's as efficient as any USB port on any computer. You cannot charge a laptop on a USB port. You can charge small electronics though. The port will be powered as long as you've got the fire running.

It's a fierce fire, too. The system uses some of the electricity generated to drive a bellows in the combustion chamber, creating a jet-like effect. It burns very, very hot. Sticks and leaves aren't going to give up much heat. You need chunks of dense wood. Like mulch, or sticks of fatwood. I always preferred not to keep the fire running for the full hour or two it would take to charge my smartphone, but at the same time, it was very, very nice to add 10%-15% to my battery in the time it took to make dinner.

Nope, don't buy it, if you are into DIY yourself, buy some solars that will charge during the day, and a battery that is big enough to charge your phone 1-2 times.
Otherwise buy one of the available products, for 130$ you can probably buy something that is at least as good as if you make it yourself.

The best review I watched regarding this was to the effect that you don't want to look at is it as a device to charge your electronics. It's a device to provide heat for cooking, and as a bonus, it can charge your cellphone or whatever else you can plug into a usb.

People are looking at it the wrong way. Let's pretend it's a cooking stove only, it supposedly works great for that, and when you factor in carrying fuel for other stoves, it's going to be lighter for a multi-day trip. (disregard that if you're only carrying 1 canister.)

Just my thoughts, and no, I don't have one.

the stove might seem bretty cul but then you realize that all it does is exploit an phenomenon that was observed nearly 200 years ago and that no one bothers to use in the industry due to how inefficient it is.

I am in agreement that a stove charger is a dumb idea. Goal Zero makes some pretty awesome panels that will charge your electronics easier. I actually mount one on my bicycle when touring..................

I came to the same conclusion. I have a Joos solar panel/battery combo and a butane rocket stove, never looked back. The only things I need to charge at my cell phone (for GPS) and a USB battery recharger for my flashlight.

It's what these 'new' companies by young people with 'gimmick' products do. They understand the Internet so they market on it accordingly.

The Apple adapter broke into pieces after 3 weeks of use... and at the same time the micro usb port was completely stripped and didn't provide a connection. After a failed attempt to replace the port i left mine in a Canadian Tire parking lot in Fredericton.
