What do I use to protect my food/drinks/smelly things when dispersed camping in bear country?

I'd be taking my wife and my baby son. There are plenty of campsites here in the Sierra Nevada that don't have bear lockers. I don't want to have to cram things into my bear canisters - I want to be able to bring food to actually cook awhile out in the back-country.
