Hey /out/,
Can we have a discussion on clothing for keeping cool, protecting from UV, and staying cool while active in very hot weather (45C/105F and up)?
Ideally full coverage clothes that are still cool is the aim, reducing the need for sunblock, while allowing air flow and sweat wicking.
Any ideas? Thoughts? Chad duster vs virgin legionnaire hat memes?

White clothing, water, and airflow. Get the widest brim hat you can find. That's a sombrero or coolie/conical hat with stampede string. It should be about 20/22 inches wide/long. Paint the top white and the under side black. Holes for air flow in the top or risers to allow air flow under the hat are best. If you are working, keep the sun in front of you, so that the hat brim will maximize the shade over your body as you bend down or tilt towards the sun a bit while working. No need, if the clothing is thin and loose, there will be plenty of air flow to help dry it out. If the humidity is too high to dry it then wicking isn't going to help and you need to get to shelter. I live in an area where it can be 98F 90-100% humidity to 108F 80% humidity in summer. Basically, you just learn to deal with it when the humidity is high. It takes the body about 2 weeks to fully acclimatize itself to weather like that.

i have not tried the white saudi style nightgown yet but imo no clothing is going to keep you cool hiking in an oven, it's going to be hot and shitty. it's like asking which windbreaker will keep wind off of you in a tornado. go /out/ before sunrise when it's only 99F, bring gallons of water and be done moving before the day heats up.

It depends on the humidity. 105F and low humidity isn't that bad, but 105F in 80% humidity can kill you. Like a summer's day in Death Valley will have an average of 10% humidity. So, the 120F, in the shade, will feel more like 107F. But, 105F with 80% will feel like 129F. Which is why some people die from heat exposure in saunas that are not very high temp.

not sure where i claimed to know anything about heat humidity indexes but i know dry heat and its still pretty shitty. there is a reason construction crews work at night here during the heat.

Yeah guys, humidity makes high heat all the worse as your body sweating to cool itself does almost nothing. Tropical heat is the worst if you're out in the open and not in shade too.
Let's keep it on topic though: what clothes would you wear in these situations to keep the heat and UV from turning you into jerky?

just don't let these humidfags convince you that dry heat is nothing to worry about, evaporative cooling via 110 degree breeze is not enough to keep you from overheating. that's how we end up with several hundred hikers getting fucked up and taking expensive helicopter basket rides off of the tiny 1300 foot mountain in the city each summer.

Also, don't underestimate sticking your bare feet into a bucket of cool water while you rest. you can go from feeling nauseous with a headache to perfectly normal in 5-10 mins of having your feet in a bucket of cool water.

When I'm camping, I have a stock pot that use with whatever local water source there is from campground spigots to mountain streams to tarp catchment. I've actually fallen asleep in a folding chair with my feet in it while camping because it was so damn hot at night. The stock pot is used to store the cooking and washing supplies and doubles as a camp shower, cloths washer, and food cooker. Durable 3 gallon water bags are pretty light and having 3-4 of them on a trip makes it easy to have 3-12 gallons of water at the camp without need to make extra trips to where ever the water source it.

If you've ever worked with water before you'd know that it evaporates and keeps much cooler than ambient temperatures even in higher humidity. Keep it in the shade when you store it. When you use it for something like your feet, the container it will be in will be open instead of closed to further help evaporation cooling. You can even soak a do-rag or thin towel in it to wear and cool yourself via evaporation. Humidity plays a role in that, but it will cool you better than you can cool yourself.

Couldn't agree more. I use one very similar to pic related everytime I go outside for more than 50 seconds. Skin damage is no joke.
Most of these straw lifeguard hats are absolute garbage though. Look for the ones that are made from wide, flat woven strands of straw. Test its durability before buying, or make sure you can return it later.

Not sure how accurate this is, but one thing I like to do with all sun-protectant purchases is to hold it up to a light source and gauge how much is coming through based on how well I can see the light through the material. Less light coming through is obviously better.

I have a big sombrero I got off ebay. No light gets through except through the grommet holes in the top. It turns a frying-eggs-on-the-sidewalk day into something I can work all day long in. I wouldn't get much down without it.

never said i had trouble, but that there is no way to avoid getting hot and shitty by using clothing except wasting water for a few minutes of fleeting relief evaporating it, and that it's better to move at night when its hot. faggot.

Never under any circumstances stick your bare feet into a bucket of cool water IF IT IS EXPOSED TO THE SUN. Got the absolutely worst sunburn ever doing exactly that. Couldn't wear fucking shoes for a week and hurt like hell, and I'll probably die of foot-skin cancer.

I live in México, and with that im ok at 100F+
The key is that dont let the sun touch your skin directly, and use cotton. The thickier the better, in hot weather you want to save as much as sweat as posible. And thick cotton is good at that.

Only feet were sunburned, and also only the part submerged in water. Rest of exposed skin not. Also grew up in med country, so please don't amerisplain to me how sun and tanning works.

Literally just wear some khaki shorts, a cotton shirt that covers your arms, a big hat, and at least 3 liters of water for every hour you intend to be /out/ in the dry heat. I've seen a guy hiking in saudi LARP clothing before and he was still struggling because he was an out of state fag that wasn't used to 115F temps by noon and didn't bring enough water cus he thought his LARP clothing would save him the trouble. Don't hike in the late afternoon in the desert if you can't take it, I've hiked in 115F before but only short hikes of about 2 hours tops. Hottest day in my memory the thermometer outside said 123F (50C) at like 5PM.
