Have you guys ever taken personal water filters /out/? If so, which is the best, or at least "good". I've seen some stuff on the Lifestraw, but that's about it.

just use micropure tablets, they're far better because they don't require cleaning, take up less space and you don't need to worry about your filter breaking

Some of the smaller katadines are great. Efficient and will filter mud if you had to. I carry a hand pump katadine as my back up and use a gravity feed bag setup from NRS for most everything. Dont listen to the guy telling you to use tablets.
I work half the year as a wilderness guide.

Use the Sawyer squeeze full size. You can back flush it so it will not clog even in filth water. Used it for 3 months straight and held up great awaiting next adventure. I've used others including lifestraw and msr and they eventually clog up. Carry the 1 L Lifewater containers for water storage. I'm assuming this is for backcountry. Also if you are doing strenuous activities, get nuun tabs to replenish electrolytes and add them to the water.

Not ideal but keep a water filter on your person to keep it from freezing. Put it in your sleeping bag at night during winter conditions.

Go with the sawyer, it's cheap and works well. As someone said, just put it in your sleeping bag on cold nights. It breaks when it freezes. The mini is great for personal use, I've had mine for a few years and still works great.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is off topic, but do you think it could be used as a viable off-grid water solution (gathering rain water then using the sawyer to filter it) for 2 people until a well can be dug?

it could. the squeeze comes with adapters to hook it up and filter from a bucket and it will supposedly filter a million gallons before needing replacement.

It looks like the Berky has an adapter for showers, is there a way to use the sawyer in a similar way? I obviously don't need pure drinking water for showering, but I'd like the water to at least be relatively clean.

depends how sophisticated you want it to be. might have to use a little imagination with the sawyer and it might not be totally ideal in all situations but hey. fill a couple bottles with filtered water, poke holes in the bottle cap, squirt on self.

Water filters with activated carbon and some "nano mesh filter" bullshit DO NOT I repeat DO NOT filter bacteria and YOU WILL get sick if you don't boil or purify your water.

These thing are only good for removing dirt and other small object including even some parasites but won't filter bacteria.

Only use it with rain water collected with a clean recipient or together with tablets/boiling.

I live in northern Scandinavia so generally speaking all running water here "should" be ok to drink as is but I still use a Hydroblu Versa Flow when /out/ing.
It's lighter cheaper and has a better flow rate than the Sawyer mini.

Also carry puritabs as a backup and there is always boiling as a last resort.
