Monoculars are way better than binoculars, IMO. I have some retarded looking one I bought in the Congo from some military surplus shop/cart thingy that has a 60mm front lens. I don't know what the zoom is, either 10 or 12.

I just checked - this item sells for 26$ here, tops.
Basically all CCCP optics are german tech stolen after WW2. So they aren't bad, just old as fuck, soviets didn't progress much after that.

I was so spoiled growing up, I didn't even realize it. My brother was really into hunting and had gargantuan binoculars with amazing clarity. He always had the best of the best at the time (80s.) I don't think I could spend $2.3k on binoculars though. Whatever Walmart has will have to do.

Heh, I actually too have something like pic related soviet binoculars, like I say, they are dirt cheap here.
But I rarely drag that heavy chunk of steel along, usually stick to a small monocular.
That reminds me, gotta get a new one, mine broke, image is blurry & dark.

Don't take them if you don't need them?

If you DO need them, buy a pair that fits your purpose - 10x25 is great for general use in daylight and as light as it gets. If you need to see in low light conditions, only then get ones with bigger lenses (50+ mm).

Nikon Action Extreme 10x50s.

A bit big and heavy for outdoors, but I also use them for star gazing at night and the extra aperture is nice then.

My papaw had a pair of these that looked 100 years old. We used them all the time playing innawoods as kids. I don't remember them being very clear but that was probably just because of their age.

Someone once said that the difference between 200 USD binoculars and 2000 USD binoculars is not that the expensive ones would be 10 times better...they're maybe 30% better (optics quality) and the rest might come from robust structure, waterproofing, brand etc.

But yeah, expensive-ish binoculars are probably as good as one can buy unless really, really needing a really, really expensive model.
