I want a mystery ranch daypack for school/travel and overnight hiking. Looking at the Coulee 25 or the Scree.

Any of you guys have experience with these or recommend anything else?

Had a scree. It was ok. I wasn't a fan, but it wasn't my size. I got a 3DAP and immediately fell in love. I use it for everything.

The mystery ranch y zipper was so iconic overnight in the spec ops circle that it has competitors at 1/3 the price that are esentially the same.

Mystery Ranch really excels at the load bearing stuff, and that is the only thing I would buy from them.

Sure, but I could pay a US cottage company to make me the exact same style of pack, with the same materials and potentially even more flawless craftsmanship for half the price. It’s just high denier nylon after all, not some space age material like cuben hybrid or dyneema leather

You will have a similar style, but you will be missing the most important part of the backpack, which is the frame system. Additionally mystery ranch packs and in particular their military line are modified constantly in response to feedback. The y zipper isn't a load bearing pack though. My sapper unit got all kinds of cool shot but we never got the mystery ranch packs back when I was in. But I saw them enough with rangers.

I would love a crewcab. But I just can't justify the price.

It still has load transfer features and adjustable internal frame which are very difficult to replicate. Maybe try a cabinet? Much more affordable and on the guidelight frame instead of the NICE frame.

You can't tuck the hip belt on the scree. It was pretty flimsy anyway, so I just strapped it around the pack.

It was a small, and I wear medium, so the waist belt was at my belly button. It was on sale so I bought it.

Imo, it's worth spending the extra money for the 3DAP. More space, molle on sides. Pockets on inside flaps. Velcro radio pouch. Mesh zipper pockets inside the main compartment. And the more applicable/storable hip belt. This list goes on.The Scree lacks all of these and the extra money is worth spending on the 3DAP is justified.

Mystery Ranch is a "cottage" company- they have about 75 employees and one location

It’s never really too big with toploaders compression straps and toploading design are conducive to shrinking down the pack size. The only thing is you must have the correct frame size and nothing ridiculous like that jan sport thing. Most of the weight in that size of backpack is in the frame and straps anyway. The difference in weight between a 60L and an 80L in the same backpack line is negligible; usually less than 10% the weight of the pack. I’d say go for an 80L pack, it’s a good size for multi day.

I’d say no, get something with a frame, of larger capacity and with fewer large pockets instead of more small pockets. The ALICE pack works well in both medium and large sizes and a correctly adjusted ALICE frame is excellent. The bundeswehr large flecktarn rucksack is good as well. They’re both available from varusteleka and are around the same price and more useful than that Brandit 3 day assault pack design IMO. It’s good to have a bit more space than not enough, you never know what you’ll pick up in the zone. Get out there and get it done.
