So I'm trying to get into kayaking. Do I need a license to kayak in rivers in California? Will I need one to kayak in a certain class rapid? Or is it just free-for-all in boating-approved rivers?

Who the fuck knows, this is California after all. Where abouts are you? I know in the Sacramento area you don't need anything for the American below Folsom Prison to Sac Rive, Mokelumne and Stanislaus are free and clear. Where do you want to Kayak? I am pretty sure you can ask at any REI or a local outdoors store near the river you want to Kayak. I would do research about the conditions where you are wanting to go first, no sense in getting in over your head first trip.

Probably worth doing a kayaking course. Learn some skills especially if you flip yourself in the whitewater m8 be careful

here in Australia there are free kayaking courses, just gotta bring your own kayak or rent one for like $20

CA is a navigable by fact state. That means if you can get a boat to float down it, its navigable. One of the few things CA is freer than the rest of the country on.
