Boots for crampon use

Evening gents,

I was wondering if 1 clip boots (b2 boots) would have too rigid a sole for regular hiking in the summer. I'd rather not buy summer and winter boots if I don't have to.

I live in the Lake District but I'm interested in trips to the Alps, hence the need for c2 crampons.

i give you credit for taking the little bit of extra time to make a post with sufficient information for proper feedback, but starting a thread over something as ubiquitous as boots without going to the catalog first is lazy.

Sounds like b2 would be necessary in the Alps then? I'm not remotely interested in sliding into a crevasse bc some c1's slipped off.

You reckon b2 would be too uncomfortable for hiking in pic related?

Former /out/fitter here, all the big manufacturers (Scarpa, Asolo, La Sportiva, etc) have a lightweight uninsulated b2 option for mixed use hiking/glacier/climbing. They tend to be referred to as guide boots, because they're obviously popular with mountain guides who have to be in their boots all day every day. The big thing is finding the one that fits your foot right. They'll take a long time to break in and if doesn't match your foot shape you'll be in agony. This is one of those times where you really do need to go to a store and start trying on boots, even if you eventually buy them online.
Garmont used to make a fantastic guide boot called the Dakota, but they discontinued it a few years ago. I have no idea why, they practically flew off my shelves.

What's the crack with used boots that have been broken in to someone else's foot? Or are new boots the only way to go. Cheers dude.

you will wreck your feet walking those mellow hills in b2 boots; they're meant for glacial terrain. Flexible crampons will do just fine in the Alps unless you're meaning to scale the eiger north face.

Used boots just depend on how hard they've been used. You can find a good deal but it takes more hunting. I dunno about over in Bongistan, but over here in Burgerstan 2nd hand /out/ stores are moderately common, as are gear swap sales sponsored by /out/ clubs.
Another good way to save a few bucks is to try on a recently updated model and then see if you can find the previous generation for sale on clearance.
A good pair of guide boots is an investment, though. They're expensive up front, but with proper care and the occasional resolve they can last you for years.

I can't go wrong with them on the easier Alps I presume? I've read in a few places that b1 isn't ideal esp. for a newbie to ice hiking

Get some trail runners for hiking and some mountaineering boots for crampon use. check out la sportiva and scarpa for boots.

this op, boots wont be all that necessary for walking on paths in the lake district unless you’re gonna be carrying a lot of weight, they can double as your running shoes too.

This guy is right. Fit is so important. You want your heel locked in but enough room in the toes that kicking steps won't hurt. You'll also need to try on crampons in person on your new boots. Crampons and welts are quirky and I've had fairly universal crampons not fit on b2 boots just because of brand to brand weirdness and sizing meaning that the crampon can't lock onto the heel welt with the kind of security I want.
