What is the deal with multi purpose survival clothing items such as kilts, shawls, ponchos, etc? Are these just larping materials, or is there practicality to these items?

They were people being clever and making do with what they had. If people in the highlands had access to rain coats and trousers they would have used them. As it was they only had acess to large rectangular woolen blankets and belts.

It certainly worked for them but they had used them all their lives and so were used to wearing kilts. Therefore if it is something one wishes to use that person ought to practice by just wearing kilts normally while they work and go about their bussiness at home.

It also should be considered that back then they were stronger than we are now.

I guess it depends on what a anon meant by "stronger". Hunter/gatherer and non-industrial agrarians tend to have good physical endurance but are generally pretty wirey. They're in the kind of shape that let's them work all day even if they can't bench as much as a football player. Your average post-industrial service worker would tire out a lot faster than them.

I keep a PVC poncho in my pack pretty much all the time. Handy as a ground cloth, impromptu shelter or just for when it starts dumping rain and even my hard shell jacket would get soaked.
They kinda suck when it's windy, thoguh.

You're thinking the modern kilt, which was invented when the old one was banned.
That became formalwear.
The old one was used in the field for multiple purposes. Back when the big one was used, formal society wasn't as much a thing as it became later, with British influence
