I work with a lot of Yoopers and yes, you're all crazy (but the fun kind). One guy used to tell me about his favorite pastime as a kid - driving his 3-wheeler down to the dump, hooking a tow chain to various appliances, and dragging them down the road to watch the sparks fly as bits fell off.
I've done most of my hikes around Marquette on some of the more well-known trails, although it's the UP so "busy" is relative. I went through Pictured Rocks a couple years ago in September and loved it, but I could see how it could get slammed busy during the summer.
