Ei /out/, fa/tg/uy here.
I'm working on the next campaign for my dnd group and the idea is about a small group of rangers (all humans, of course) and their adventures in the great outdoor.
Now, nevermind all the fantasy stuff, I'm here to ask: how can I make this feel the most as realistic as possible? Realistically, what I have to consider about the life of a small group of humans in the wild to make it feel as it should be?
In shorter terms: what are some common misconception in fantasy about rangers and their lifestyle, in your opinion?

I'd imagine you would travel until your preprepared food ran out, then you would make a basecamp and hunt and dry meat for a say or two.
I'd have them roll for roles: camp man, hunter, navigator

To me the biggest misconceptions that everyone (especially on the internet) makes is that they could just go out and "survive" or "live of the land" just like that. You see it all the time, but even the survival "experts" that join the Alone TV-show are fucking miserable and loose a lot of weight. In their defence they're sent to shitty areas but still many of them make a living from teaching people "survival".

Actually getting enough food through gathering takes a big amount of skill, knowlegde and time. Hunting and fishing will help a lot but still takes efford (like staying in a place to learn about where game and good fishing locations are). If you also wan't the group to be mobile, an important aspect would be to prapare and store food correctly - like considering the time it takes to butcher, cut and dry/smoke fish or deer.

Water is also a thing. If they're in a place where it rains often, then there should be clear streams and rivers around. They're generally safe to drink from, but if they have time boiling the water is best - especially if they're in the low-lands where water runs more slowly and potential dead animals could be lying in the water upstream.
People who work or hike all day need to drink several liters and maybe some for cooking as well. Therefore it's a good idea to camp close to running water in the nights. If water is scarse during the days then each group members need to carry 3-5 liters each. That will get them through a day of walking/hunting, cooking in the everning and next morning. After that they'll need to resupply (unless they rationalize water. In an emergency they could do with a litre or two pr. person pr. day, but that would suck, and be dangerous in the long run)

they're all also level 1 commoners with 0 ranks in wilderness lore. even a level 1 ranger is going to be able to take a 10 on all of that and accomplish it easily in most environments. op, don't derail your own campaign by getting hung up on trivialities like this. unless they're trekking for multiple days across a frozen snow covered tundra or a barren desert in summer and have a real challenge surviving AND that specifically ties into the campaign, just have them roll their checks and give them a couple sentences of flavor text, and move on.

Yes, a ranger would fare a lot better than most people who shitpost on the internet, but the notion that "even a level 1 ranger is going to be able to take a 10 on all of that and accomplish it easily in most environments" is bullshit. Shit takes efford even for the experts.

yes. and i could ask the same of you. because my primary point is that it doesn't matter and obsessing over details that are still going to come down to a dc check is a great way to lose a whole night of gaming to the dm spewing minutiae, instead of letting the pcs, y'know, PLAY.

Decide on the style of fire building you'll be doing and method of fire lighting then roll for success. You could even add in random stuff based on breaking camp. Like if the fire was made in the wrong spot or incorrectly put out then roll for forest fire chance.

For the camp, this is something that is dependent on terrain and surrounding area. Also, if there are wild animals or other threats, you need to take that into account. It may be a difference of making a relaxed car camping type of experience, a enoing camp where everyone is 10-15 feet up in trees with hammocks, or an entrenched camp with a dry moat and dike for defence.

This is more gear related than anything. Stream/river flooding, whit out blizzards, and such are really the only main threats you need to worry about and make a camp for to wait it out. There's also the lack of rain or water and knowing how to acquire it and make it safe to drink. Like if they are in the desert and try to get water from a barrel cactus, everyone gets the shits, but from digging in a dry stream bed or sticking rope into crevices of a damp cliff face you may get water good enough to pasteurize and drink.

This takes forever, but is better with younger animals. The best method is to trap the mother and newborns. Don't try to tame the mother, but constantly tame the newborns. Once the newborns are finally weened from the mother you can release the mother. For birds, it is more difficult due to feeding requirements of chicks. You won't need the parents, but you will need a large supply of food and be feeding near constantly during the day. At least it will be a fairly short amount of time, depending on bird species. Predatory birds will be easy to feed, but ones that need insects may be more difficult to feed.

This is a huge subject. I suggest perusing this website, https://www.primitiveways.com/ for the basics and going from there with your own research. There is also a Ray Mears collection torrent that has tons of good info if you can find it. The "Ray Mears' Extreme Survival" episodes have information that spans across many terrain types from dessert to mountains and includes info that is used in each instance. There's 20 hours of video just in that show along and there're many other shows he has done.

There's a ton of valid info online for how to do this effectively. Just research it a bit and watch videos. There's stalking, hunting blinds, tree stands, and game pushes you can research. The key is learning the game trails and game habits over the course of a few days in a single area.

This is where you just need to watch a bunch of survival videos and download a bunch of wild edible foraging pdfs. Search on google like this, "wild edible plants filetype:pdf" and whatever you need to search. There's some nice foraging info on places like http://www.eattheweeds.com/

Download military books, like "U.S. Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76" or "U.S. Army Special Forces Handbook" and similar publications from world mlitaries. Get the ones that are officially published by a branch of military and not simply ones by random people despite them previously being in the military.

Travelers will hunt as they travel so they always maintain a surplus of food. Never ever wait until you run out of food. At the very least, you will setup camp each evening and set traps & trot lines then check them in the morning during some foraging. That is the least you'd be doing.

And, any number of Ray Mears' videos. If you are starving and miserable while trying to, "survive," then you are not an expert at it. Also, your definition of "expert" is incorrect. The people you are actually describing are "professionals" who make a profession from teaching these things. An expert doesn't need to be a professional and a professional doesn't need to be an expert. Walking out into the bush and surviving, nay thriving is very easy when you are an expert in that environment. The main thing you need to expect when living off the land, is that you are always doing something. You don't have any real down time for a long while until you can build up food reserves and finish all shelters needed. That is assuming you go out into the bush armed with the clothing on your back and a parang, machete, or knife and nothing else. The land, even in a desert is full of resources and only people who are ignorant of how to utilize them will have serious trouble.
