Delicious and toasty but heavy as fuck. It will keep you feeling dry and comfy but not necessarily warm when raining because it actually takes a while to dry out and you need to keep your activity levels up or the wet fur will sap the heat from you. Based for its capillary action though, can’t think of a better layer for sweaty active movement in cold

Will start to smell bad though unless treated, but idk if Buffalo makes silver impregnated fur

I got an older meme winter coat from Fjalraven with their G1000 fabric. I'll say the Cotton synthetic blend is pretty good. It is very durable, and the breathability is just enough for me (I sweat a lot), and if you wax it up its pretty good dealing with some light rain while retaining a decent amount of breathability.

Nonsense. The reason it's done like that is that cotton absorbs moisture, thereby transferring it. Most synthetics do not do that by themselves, thus why they're used as microfibre - which is, in turn, less durable. Cotton blends make for a good compromise of durability and breathability.

Everything saps heat at about the same rate when wet.

Fine wool like merino dries quite fast, about as fast as fleece on a per-warmth basis since you have to have heavier fleece to match the warmth of wool.

Also anyone who wants a campfire doesn't want to wear fleece, or plan to replace it every few months which you'll probably want to do anyway since it traps stink like nothing else.

You can either let moist air pass through, or absorb moisture into the material and have it evaporate on the other side. In a windshell, the first one is precisely what you don't want. Now, most synthetics do not absorb much moisture into the material like cotton (nylon does a little, polyester next to none), so it is made to absorb water by using finer fibres and absorb it inbetween the fibres. Thus why microfiber is such a big deal. However, these are less durable. You can make very durable synthetic fabrics (like cordura), but they will be less breathable. Or you can blend durable synthetics with absorbent cotton and get a reasonable compromise.
Thus why
-performance outdoor stuff is made from thin microfibre synthetics
-military and workwear clothes are often made from cotton blends
-these clothes are often reinforced with cordura in wear-critical areas, but not made from it entirely

Poly doesn't absorb water because it isn't a hollow fiber. The only way it insulates it by trapping air inside the weave, which is the same place it traps moisture. You can't "shake it 99% dry" because the moisture is trapped inside thw weave.

Feel free to weighta polyester fleece jacket, soak it and weigh it, then shake it out and calculate the weight retained in water.

And by "heavier" I meant the bulk of the garment. Poly, due to being a solid fiber, has to be made of a heavier pile for the same warmth as wool, which is a hollow fiber.

You don't seem to understand much about flow dynamics. Narrow gaps between a tightly woven fabric may slow down wind to the point it is unnoticable, stopping heat loss through convection. The same narrow gaps are wide enough for the diffusion of water vapour through the fabric to take place relatively unhindered.

Cammies absolutely are a shell - against abrasion mostly, but against wind also. And many of those are not even meant to be worn against the skin. As for the cotton, no it does not retard flame very much (not in 65/35 polycotton blend anyway). It also doesn't explain why workwear clothes are made from it. (Don't give me some crap about 35% cotton making it so much cheaper.)

I think we have to make sure we're talking about the same things. "Windproof" means something is air-and-water permeable, but breaks the flow of air. This eliminates wind chill and improves the effectiveness of non-windproof insulating layers worn underneath. "Waterproof" means resisting a certain water column or hydrostatic head from permeating the fabric or membrane. and wetting the material underneath. To my knowledge, it is impossible to have a waterproof fabric that is not windproof.

I say this as someone who has hiked with a synthetic puffy (Patagonia Nano Puff hoody). I ended up leaving my puffy packed into its pocket for the coldest part of the hiking season this year. the only reason to bring a synthetically insulated puffy jacket while backpacking is lack of experience & packing your fears.
you have to be retarded to get your down jacket wet. bring a quality rain layer if you are in a region with a chance of precipitation. one of my biggest gear regrets is buying a synthetic puffy, second only to buying a puffy at all. it is now glorified loungewear and streetwear. yes a puffy is comfy if you are doing nothing, that's why I'm wearing it while typing right now in my bed, and why I didn't wear it in the Smoky Mountains in December with persistent snow and sub-20F temps.

if we're talking about backpacking here, why would you bring two pieces of "stop" insulation, down quilt (24oz or less) & either variety of puffy (7-12oz) when you could bring only your down quilt which is more thermally efficient for the weight and not stand around not moving for 90+ minutes every day like a retarded section hiker. your "go" insulation should be two things that you'll take with you pretty much no matter what: a fleece (8-12oz), with your rain layer (mine is 10.5oz) if required. A puffy jacket is typically too hot to hike in above 10F, so if you have one, it is typically only useful for stopping while hiking, so you are literally carrying additional weight so you can go slower and cover fewer miles.

Perhaps I just run much warmer than average, but hiking through 5-20F weather in deep snow, I've found that unless you're just wasting time and not moving your body, there is no reason to carry pants or a puffy jacket. The puffy will make you sweat, you'll swap it for a fleece, you'll waste time layering & delayering...

You really are in well over your head. You should call Goretex and tell them that ALL their membranes are wind proof rather than just the ones they designed to be windproof.

yes, you can. yes, the moisture exists between the weaves, but it's not really trapped by anything. there's nothing forcing it to stay between the fibers, where as for example, the interior fiber of the wool is hydroscopic and thus tries to keep the moisture in.

i've several times washed my fleece and it's nearly dry to touch when i take it out of the machine. i cant do a proper shaking by hand in my apartment. of course it's not just a few easy shakes and it's dry, but dry enough that the difference in warmth is negligible.

depends on how you define windproof and waterproof. power shield pro is 5000mm and 2 CFM. i'd call it windproof, but people have said they can feel the air coming through in heavy winds with neoshell (1 cfm)

I have one and while it's nice it's not really warm enough for when it drops down into the 30s. I have a 250 merino base layer and the Delta is light enough so that I can walk with it without getting sweaty but it definitely won't cut it for when I'm stationary.

It's really nice for when it's just a bit chilly or if you're being physically active but it's not a good wintertime jacket.

yeah it's for thru hiking so I would be using it as it was intended, as a technical fleece. cool weather stop insulation and cold weather go mid layer. typically under a GTX rain jacket to trap more heat.

Yep that's what I do as well and it works really well. Got a smartwool 250 base layer, delta lt mid and norrona falketind gtx jacket hard shell. It was enough to keep me warm in the cascades a couple of weeks ago. I had another thicker fleece for when i made stops though.

depends. there are windshells that are less breathable than neoshell and there are windshells that are very air permeable but still called windshells cause that's their primary function is blocking wind. it doesn't necessitate blocking all of it.
