Hey guys

What do you think about garmin 401 as GPS?
Worth a buy?
Im just tired of using phone as GPS device and i think i could repalce it with this foretrex 401

Is there no issue that u dont see a map?
Or u have cheked the route in coumputer? Or do u carry a map with you?

I carry a map with me. It's not an issue for me but you might want to try simulating it with your phone by just using a compass/coordinate type app to see if you're comfortable with that if you haven't done so already.

yep. it's a bit limited in what it will accept. you might want to google the process ahead of time, iirc the manual doesn't cover it much anyway

Works pretty good but I would get a modern gps watch like a Garmin or Suunto; they combine the US and Russian gps system signals to get a better location as well as faster acquisition and better coverage. If you’re limited on budget, I’d go for the 401 tho; it’s good to have if you’re in a place with poor visibility (dark/snow/fog).

I bought one of my buddy at work for cheap. haven't gotten the chance use it on a trip yet. these are really good if you are Bush whacking long distance to a specific area.

I used one for years in the Army and still do. It's great if you have a map to supplement, but I wouldn't use just the GPS without a map or compass to check your bearing and terrain associate.

I used to have one, but I moved to a garmin Epix, because de 401 is very limited and painful to use for sports. For hiking, not having the map built in or having to set all the waypoints before si quite annoying and I've actually stopped doing it after a few uses, just using it to track my activities et read my elevation/speed/distance.

I have one and used it for soil sampling surveys for work without issue. Very sturdy and being on the wrist is super useful. It is pretty thirsty for batteries however. I went through two AAAs per work day.

Have never used it hiking as I have a phone with useful apps and a backup battery pack.

All in all I can't recommend it for anything other than very specific navigation tasks where both hands are needed at all times.

does it have easy access to use good on screen maps?
if it doesn't have a good color graphical map display i just stick with paper map and compass
