Here's a type of modified Promontory peg trigger for deadfall traps. I've been testing it out this week. It is only slightly more difficult to set, but you can place the bait further back under the deadfall.

I prefer snares myself. You can set those pretty much anywhere without much regard for local resources. With deadfall traps you need to source a stone or log that fits what you want to make. Since you'd normally be making 10-20 of these over a large area, that starts to get tiresome pretty quickly. On the other hand, wire snares are much easier to set up.
